To each their own, I think it's precisely against character because Ash KNEW Eiji was waiting for him and was right there. I dunno if they changed it for the animation as I am not ready to suffer through it again, but in the manga, Eiji GIVES Ash a plane ticket to Japan so that Ash could escape with him and be free. It's not a question of "Would Eiji be there" but a question of "Hey, I'm here", so yeah, Ash had everything to live.

Re: the reasons for the ending? I heard the rumor about River's death being the cause of the ending way back in 1997. I had never heard that it was the opposite, that when he died, Yoshida thought about letting Ash live. That's a new one for me.

Manga fan going way back myself. I just think Ash's death feels pretty telegraphed. I think if the story was written today he'd be kept alive with a bow on it to avoid accusations of prejudice, but the story is pretty... purely an expression of whatever it was intended to be. Ash perseveres despite everything that's been done to him, but he completes his core goals, and without Eiji literally next to him to cling to, he's kind of broken and the story won't criticise him for that. Kind of cool that he's allowed to be clever and brave and strong - and mentally ill and affected by everything he's been through.

I will be completely honest, most of the other Banana Fish fan I know are also old time Manga fans like you and I, and you're the first person ever who has said that about the ending. Everyone else felt suckerpunched and really betrayed (even people whom, in other stories, saw the twists and deaths coming a mile away). But hey, if it works for you? I'm really happy :)
