(Anonymous) 2022-02-26 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)Manga fan going way back myself. I just think Ash's death feels pretty telegraphed. I think if the story was written today he'd be kept alive with a bow on it to avoid accusations of prejudice, but the story is pretty... purely an expression of whatever it was intended to be. Ash perseveres despite everything that's been done to him, but he completes his core goals, and without Eiji literally next to him to cling to, he's kind of broken and the story won't criticise him for that. Kind of cool that he's allowed to be clever and brave and strong - and mentally ill and affected by everything he's been through.
