I still don't get how people didn't understand why this was a ship. Rivals-to-lovers, red-oni-blue-oni, etc is SUCH common shipping fodder. Hell, they even had a "locked in an elevator half-naked" episode and had to Emperor's-New-Groove their way out.

Mini essay incoming

I think there are a few types of people who don't understand why it was a ship. The first, fairly simply, are people who just don't know the popular ship tropes. They just watched the show and saw two characters who didn't get along in the first season and didn't have much to do with each other at all after that. Naturally they'd be confused.

People who know the popular tropes but still say they don't get it are, I think, not speaking entirely literally. They do "get" it, because they know the tropes, but Klance is still fairly weak fodder for them if you take the entire series into account at once. They heavily fit the tropes in season 1, but only in season 1. After that, nothing. They barely even talk to each other. What some people don't get is that for a long time (by fandom standards) that first season was all there was. Klance took off immediately after the show dropped, and while fans eagerly anticipated their growing relationship in the later seasons that never ended up happening, and some of them were disappointed that it didn't, as a whole Klance fandom was pretty much its own thing still riding the high from season 1 and not paying attention to how the characters' relationship was (not) developing in canon.

So when people say they don't get Klance, it's because they entered the fandom later than the first season, and from their perspective canon Keith and Lance are weak fodder for shipping, not warranting the amount of popularity they have. You'd have to have seen how the shipping unfolded for it to really make sense why Klance is such a juggernaut.

AYRT and huh. That does make a whole lot of sense (and I did watch from the beginning).

I love this secret.
Not because I'm in the Voltron fandom, but because I often check if my ships "won the war", even if I'm not into reading fanfictions of those particular pairings.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm disappointed too.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because they liked Sheith better, and wanted them to win the war?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
...id rather have quality over quantity.

That's just me!

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
In a perfect world, it would be possible to have both. But alas, this is not a perfect world.

It’s always a great feeling when you get into a new fandom, and you see how many fics there are for your ship(or for the fandom in general), and it seems that there’s a veritable bevy to choose from. But then the feeling goes any when you have to slog through so much crap to get to the good fic. Or when the number of fics goes down dramatically when you exclude all the tags you hate or find squicky.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
this is assuming that lack of fic = better quality. as someone with many small ships this is rarely the case. more fic means there's more decent fic overall even if i have to wade through some dreck. less fic means that nearly all of it is dreck with only a few decent fics. personally i find more fic to be a net gain rather than a loss.

This^

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
what the fuck honestly

your ship is so popular you have FIFTEEN THOUSAND fics and you're mad that someone else has more????

it's like the petty meaningless fandom version of rich dudes who have more money than they can ever spend but still want MORE, like, why though, seriously, why do shipwars do this to your brain, please just enjoy your fucking riches instead of being bitter that someone, somewhere, might have more than you

+1000

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
(I... think OP was being humorous?)

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, that’s still a huge amount of fic just because it’s not the biggest ship doesn’t suddenly make the numbers chump change. I’d love some of my small OTP’s to have half the numbers Shiro/Keith has. :/

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I didn’t see this as OP lamenting that they didn’t have enough fic, or that Klance being more popular made the number of Sheith fics less significant. I saw it more as them just being disappointed that there ship wasn’t the juggernaut. I could be wrong though.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, this doesn't really mean everything. For example, Gin/Rangiku is THE ship for either character in terms of popularity among the Bleach fandom (hi, yes, it is Bleach nonny again. They keep giving me new content this year which is reinforcing my hyperfixation). But it's really close to Gin/Aizen in terms of the number of Ao3 fics, and there's even fewer if you just count fics where it's the main.

Maybe this is a side character thing, though.

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Makes perfect sense to me! You don't have to fight dirty if you're "winning".

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Fight dirty"...?

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
...There were plenty of Klancers who were awful and wished death on people, up to I think Klancers sent death threats to actors, didn't they???

(Anonymous) 2022-02-27 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
They also sent gore and real CP to Sheith shippers, threatened, suicide baited and tried to doxx them and get them fired and were generally awful under the guise of having some imagined moral high ground.

I don't think any can call it a win having to slog through all of that low quality fic to find the good ones

(Anonymous) 2022-02-28 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Joke's on you, Sheith has way better quality fanart and far more lewds than Klance. Seethe.

This.
