I started re-watching DBZ as an adult, and I was shocked at how good the characters are and how amazing the character development is. I think the writing for Gohan and Vegeta is REALLY REALLY good.

S!B: Among the circles I'm in, this show is considered fun nostalgia at best and dumb as hell at worst.

It's certainly tropey, but yeah - they do a good job of balancing out the plotlines.

Oh yeah the writing is honestly pretty great. The biggest problem is that the fights are stretched out too long, especially later in the show.
