Aaaaand here's an exact reason we need disability awareness! There are mental illnesses that make people more inclined to do dangerous things and the people who have them are heavily stigmatized, so the "allegory" you're calling offensive is not an "allegory," it's a thing that literally happens to real people all the time.

Personally, there's a kind of mystique to it, an air of mystery. You start building up the character in your head a bit, especially if they (he, in this case) have/has a very nice voice. Of course, you're hoping he's hot (I can attest even I don't know what I picture beneath the helmet, but it's beautiful), but it's really the mental build up. I don't know how to explain it. Maybe others have different reasons.

You mean David Jason in the role? He was a big deal in British television at the time, beloved national treasure, that sort of thing, so him being attached as the NAME for the show was probably not going to be something that they could nix. He'd have brought viewers in in the UK in a way a lot of other actors couldn't. I agree he wasn't a good fit for the role, but he was probably what got it made.

I agree, personally - those covers really put me off when I first saw them (I think the first one I saw was for one of the PC games), with the rather deformed and melty style. They *are* distinctive though, in a way that Paul Kidby's more accurate and aesthetically pleasing covers are not.

Never mind, it’s honestly understandable, considering it would just be a response to a deleted comment. So it makes sense. I hadn’t seen that the earlier thread dealing with the first asshole was also deleted, so I apologize for asking a stupid question that I could have found an answer to if I had just scrolled up a little.

It's definitely easy to go down that path of worry, I totally understand. I'm dating myself big time here, but I was an older teen during the height of the Cold War, and it felt very much the same as this-- all the big "what if"s, what leaders might turn out to be megalomaniacs who would punch the button just to get their way.

The important thing to remember is that it's just not how the global economy works. In the end, there's no politician that's actually insane enough to ruin the entire world because that means the end of their own power. Threats, yes, absolutely-- it's good to appear that you're ready to throw down, markets can and will bend to that. But it'll never actually be done.

I know it's scary. This shit kept me up nights the first time around, so I'm not about to shame anyone for being afraid and thinking about the worst case scenario. I just want to offer my perspective as someone that's been through it before.

I'm a little bit older than you, and... yeah, always hated them. I was really pleased when the hard back re-issues started coming out. I think they're really pretty anyway, but they could be a lot less nice and I'd still be happy to replace the old Kirby paperbacks.

they're interesting games even if they shot themselves in the foot with trying to provide different endings when it came to mankind divided.
mankind divided just lost the plot imo. what would the correct response be to the fact that people with cybernetics were hijacked to kill everyone around them? how do we offer people who are a danger to those around them and themselves a fair life?
the game doesn't want to answer those questions, it doesn't want humans earnestly trying to deal with the reality they live in. it wants illuminati intrigue.

I remember, last year, my mother being so, so worried that Trump would throw a tantrum and blow the planet before he surrendered his spot to Biden, likening him to those entitled white males who murder their whole families when their wives threaten to leave them and take the kids away... only with more power. Next time we get scared again I'll remember that it didn't happen after all!
