It'll depend on the character. I've been impressed with some of his performances so we'll see.

But I don't really trust the weibo fandom netizens to be anything but toxic regardless of how he performs.

Yeah this. He has plenty of haters of many different flavours so there will be a certain amount of shit thrown his way no matter what he does. And thats not even factoring in whether certain groups will be trying sabotage him as well for acting in a popular BL drama.

I've been acerbic about his acting choices before but he can only improve if he reaches, good for him. Also better direction can do wonders.

Agreed. I actually thought he did an okay job in Legend of Fei even if I didn't enjoy the series much as a whole, and I liked him in Gank Your Heart, too. IMO. The Untamed was a little rough in spots, but I don't blame him, really. It's hard to communicate so much when your face and body language has to remain fairly impassive. I hope it'll be a learning/growing experience for him, he's so young yet.

Just make up your own mind. There's already so much prejudice in Chinese audiences who think someone can't be good because they're popular. There's nothing wrong with his acting and he works constantly with an acting coach and is very thorough in understanding what the director wants.

The toxic wank is gonna happen not matter how good he is. The Chinese can't be critical about politics or social issues, or world politics (which they don't even know about) so for some reason the snake pit is entertainment.

Plus seriously, I see a lot of people others rave about and think they're as interesting as a block of wood.
