Ideally, if social justice progresses, every generation will look back at things that were progressive for their time and cringe. Future generations will look at works created now and see all the ways it was backwards.

Ideally. That's how it's supposed to work, in theory. In reality, progress isn't linear. In some fields we can look back to some historical periods and places with envy, because some things have regressed.

We can already see it happening even today. Gen Zers are already OK-Boomering Millennials. And ya love to see it.

Funny, I think of Gen Z as the step back.

Not as a whole. There is many Gen Z’ers who seem to be upholding well the tradition of social justice progressing further with each generation. Taking the activism of Millennials, and going further in the right direction. And obviously, Millennials did the same with the activism of us Gen X’ers, who did the same with the pre and post-Vietnam activism of certain Boomers, and so on going back to the suffragettes and the very beginning of The Civil Rights movements.

But as a result of there being so many Gen Z’ers(just like there’s so many people that make up every other generation of course), the type of people that make it up vary wildly. And some Gen Z’ers are more of a step back than a step forward. But Millennials were kind of the same way. Many Millennials went further in their activism than Gen X, upholding the tradition, but many weren’t nearly as progressive as a lot of Gen X’ers were.

That’s why it’s wrong to generalize an entire generation. There’s too much variation, too much good and bad examples to paint them all with the same broad brush. I just wish the Gen Z’ers who are still trying to make the “Generation War” a thing would get that memo. Because OK-Boomering Millennials and Gen X’ers is helping nobody, at least when the people they’re slinging that phrase at clearly don’t have a Boomer mindset. Because when even some Boomers don’t have the obnoxious Boomer mindset that led to OK Boomer being coined, people should really be more choosy in who they OK Boomer. And obviously, the Generation War is just stupid in general.

There will never be a 100% consensus on what "the right direction" is though. And I do believe with the current climate of "cancel and shout down everyone who doesn't agree with my particular brand of what right is" from all sides, it's going to splinter more and more for quite a while.

"Even some boomers"? Nice to see your prejudices front and center.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
Gen Z abandons previous norms in favor of their own, obvs must be a step back. Okay, boomer. Sorry you aren't the boss of what is acceptable no more.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, who's an edgy little sweetie? You are! Yes you are.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh look, the usual sneering troll showed up. You are exhausting.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, that reply was richly deserved.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. Gen Z really are delicate little snowflake babies. They love dishing it out, but they can't take even one little bit.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha so true.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-04 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
y'all mean the ones that are still literal teenagers? have you perhaps considered not bullying children online?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
As long as those same teens bully others and throw around death and rape threats at anyone they don't like? Nope. You can't behave like a complete asshole and then hide behind "but I'm a miiinooor" when some of the shit you throw splashes back at you.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-05 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, is that their newest defense?
"I'm a teen! You have to be nice to me, even if I'm being an asshole to you. Otherwise you're bullying a minor."

I swear, they get more annoying every week.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Not nearly as exhausting as you with your manufactured outrage at everything that makes you even mildly uncomfy.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
And you don't even know what a boomer is. You deserved that sneer.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-03 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I'm sorry, are you talking as if your generation as a monolithic whole? Because it seems to be as much a mix as every previous generation, except for the fact that Gen Z has abandoned rational thought, nuance, and compassion in favor of derision and unthinking mob rule to achieve their aims. Spoiler alert: in the end, change by fear never lasts.

Yeah.

This for some reason reminded me of that meme that's been making the rounds again about how medieval men hated the vikings because they bathed once a week and combed their hair and therefore were so appealing that their women were tempted away from them.

Cause you know, I have definitely seen that kind of guy at anime conventions and on Twitter.

Memes are not history.
