I honestly heard Weird Al's version before the original, and before that the only time I'd heard anything of it was Dave Barry, and one of my longtime favorite They Might Be Giants songs refers to it (It's Not My Birthday).

...Come to think of it I'm not sure I've heard the original yet, just seen the lyrics quoted and thanks to Al I know the tune...
