I mean it is pretty doofy, and I say this with all love and fondness. I feel it works better in Old Who, which had that kind of stage show artifice to it? Like, you knew going in that that was a styrofoam rock, and you knew that was a quarry in Wales, and you could really tell that this was a sci-fi show done on a budget more suited to a snack run down to the shops. So you kind of went in with more of an upfront suspension of disbelief, and that made it easier to roll with. Because it’s a goofy-ass show, but it’s a goofy-ass show with sometimes really good storylines and sometimes some really horrifying things can happen and there’s some decent sci-fi and moral quandries in there. Just, you know, also visible styrofoam and hammy acting and ridiculous aliens and a painfully visible budget for a lot of its run.

It's both serious and inextricably doofy, and that's what makes it great. Delta and the Bannermen comes two stories before Remembrance of the Daleks and they both completely rule.

I do understand why people take it seriously. But I don't think they should take it that seriously.

Isn't all fiction sort of inherently doofy?

It's made-up people, in made-up places, involved in made-up situations. Sometimes they are just drawn lines. They aren't there; if they die, they can be brought back; if they do something terrible, it can be ignored or retconned; if they do impossible or ridiculous things, that's just the way it works; yet we care about them anyway.

I guess my question is do you think no fictional media should be taken as seriously as people take doctor who, or is there some fiction threshold you have?

Portraying serious topics in doofy ways is nothing new or bad or dissonant. At its best, it's a clever way to address things that wouldn't get past moral guardians if they were played seriously. No, not all episodes or arcs of Doctor Who are more than campy sci-fi fun, but for a counterexample, there's an episode of Classic Who about the negligence of mental health and the false popular message that you can stop being depressed if you try hard enough, that also features secret police that go undercover pretending to be sympathetic to unhappy people and then immediately arrest them when they open up about their depression - which was a real tactic used in the UK at the time to "catch" gay men but would never be acknowledged on a family show, especially not in the bad light that it was in this episode. And this episode all takes place in one of the cheesiest settings, with one of the most ridiculous villains, the show has to offer. As someone who was struggling with depression when I first saw it, it made me cry.

Fair enough. The movie is my childhood and I adore it beyond reason, but it's not a thing everybody has to enjoy.

(Though, honestly, the Swamp of Sadness was never what got me either. It was the Rockbiter's suicidal PTSD moment near the end. "They look like good, strong hands. Don't they." That broke me).

The Empress was easily one of the coolest people in the movie, though. I wanted her pearl headdress so goddamn much as a kid.
