oh the movie was terrible, completely mangled the book's themes. if i remember correctly michael ende hated it

I thought everything up until the end was fine as an adaptation of the first part of the book. The problem is the story doesn't *work* without the latter half of the book, and what they replaced it with ruined the whole thing. I have some affection for the movie just based on the atmosphere but I'd love a remake that actually does the book justice.

I know it's popular to say that things should be TV shows instead of movies, but I really would absolutely love a miniseries adaptation. Even at a basic plot level, I feel like you need a longer time to work through the extended arc that doesn't really match movie pacing.

Of course, there are also so many little details I'd love to see... the night forest/day desert, the weeping worms that turn into aggressively laughing butterflies, the highly communal grass-sailing people, etc. The world was so incredibly rich. Maybe it's time for me to re-read it.

I've never read this book as a child, it wasn't very popular in my country, but after your comment I definitely plan to. So Thanks

Fair enough. The movie is my childhood and I adore it beyond reason, but it's not a thing everybody has to enjoy.

(Though, honestly, the Swamp of Sadness was never what got me either. It was the Rockbiter's suicidal PTSD moment near the end. "They look like good, strong hands. Don't they." That broke me).

The Empress was easily one of the coolest people in the movie, though. I wanted her pearl headdress so goddamn much as a kid.

I totally agree about the Rock Biter being the part of the movie that has the biggest emotional impact.

I think the swamp scene affected me more in the book, maybe because Artax actually speaks, so the depression/despair aspect has more of a punch.

And he doesn't magically come back at the end IIRC.

Oh my god, THIS. I literally can't even describe the scene out loud to anyone or my voice goes all wobbly.

shun the disbeliever. shun.

j/k. I mean, I love it, and the empress is still the first person who comes to mind when I hear the word ethereal, but yeah, it's not much like the book and if you don't like it, you don't like it.

I read the book first and it was my favorite book throughout elementary school, the first time I saw the movie I thought it was an atrocious retelling and hated it with a burning passion. Strangely I appreciated it a bit more rewatching it as an adult but still don't love it.

I don't much like the movie, but I still don't get how someone can't feel emotions at the swamp scene. Animal death gets me every time. But I know, different strokes.

I am currently on my very first reading of it (Kind of a sacrilege as a german lol), since a super pretty illustrated version came out some time ago - i had some nostalgia goggles from when i saw the movie as a kid, and i loved Fuchur so much. (You can still visit a set/movie Museum which has lots of props from this movie)
The book however... wow! Just, WOW. especially the second part contributes so much to the whole story, the Desert, the forest, the knights, bastian slowly losing his memory, it's so much richer, much more terrifying and incredibly beautiful. I read some chapters twice in a row because i felt my brain hadnt absorbed all of it. It's a 10/10 recommendation for all kids.

(if you haven't read momo either, it's not as grand as neverending story but it is still incredibly sweet and beautifully written, so please check it out too!)

I think the horse drowning in the mud traumatized me. It's amazing how much traumatic shit stuff aimed towards kids had back then. Kids content these days is so sanitized... but maybe it's for the better.

I think that traumatic stuff is why I have anxiety problems.
