On a Cartesian plane where x = the doofiness level of the show and y = how disproportionately seriously fans tend to take it, the graph of DW fandom is an exponential curve. Which is a bit much for my preferences, really

ok, then I will just say that the doofiness of plot/setting/acting isn't the same as doofiness of themes and people are actually pretty likely to take theme seriously, and even export that seriousness into other less serious aspects of the show, even in the doofiest of shows. And the themes of doctor who, more explicitly in new than old, are dark as hell (I would even say the doofiness is there to make the themes palatable to a general audience).

NAYRT

I think the fact that Doctor Who can encompass both doofiness and seriousness is really intrinsic to the show. And I think the fandom should reflect that - I think focusing too much on the seriousness is a misreading of the show.

DA - that was my reading of the secret too. I do think there are some things about this show that are extremely silly (like don't they initially defeat the scariest big bad because they can't go up the stairs in the old series) and it's selling the show short to only acknowledge the cool / badass / serious stuff and pretend it's not also dumb and funny sometimes.

I don't think a fandom can "misread" a show based on what they focus on; I think that's a misunderstanding of the purpose of fandom (which is not to reflect the show).
