It was back in the late '40s. I ended up reading underneath that it was Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. And they were like 17. So I just kind of wrote that song from that place, not really knowing how they met or anything like that."
So yeah, it was a song about two idealistic teenagers in the 1940s crashing a fancy party and having a blast, being in young love, and dreaming about their future together. One of them happened to be named Robert, but there are a lot of Roberts in the world. It's only about the Kennedys if you want it to be.
Aaand this is the most I'm ever going to defend Starlight, which is one of my least favorite songs off of the absolute banger that was Red.
