...a lot of name-brand and generic things are actually the exact same thing from the exact same plant, just in different packaging.

This, exactly. I've had a couple name brands that tasted better (generic cola generally is overly-sweet and kinda yucky, i'll take Dr. Pepper over 'cola' any day), but yeah - most tastes the same 'cause it IS the same.
