I mean, I first read it when I was 10-11 and managed fine but that is undeniably pushing toward the older side of "child" and I already knew it wasn't a happy story going in. I remember it took me quite some time but that's because I was terrible at setting some time aside to read in those days. I would guess I only succeeded in completing it because I mostly used the 30 minutes of reading time a couple of days a week at primary school to read.

But I also read War of the Worlds at the same age so maybe I was just odd, idk.
