I love the idea of roleplaying games ... it's an arena for creative imagination, based on cooperation. But in practice, a) I'm too shy to act out a character b) Even when watching others I cringe so hard from the same second-hand embarrassment I feel any time I watch someone do improv

I always knew he was a wackadoodle conspiracy nut, but I thought he was more the post-watergate nut rather than a post-9/11 truther. Damn, that is a harsh pill to swallow, he was one of my first crushes. Watergate-era conspiracies were always the best, mostly they were nonsense for the sake of nonsense; even when there were true believers, they were only true believers in nonsense. Then the flatearthers suddenly started taking it seriously. My college flat earth society was just an excuse to come up with deliberately outlandish theories, we never thought anyone would be serious about it.

I don't feel like basing things off real life events is intrinsically harmful; you're free to imagine whatever you want in your own mind and it doesn't hurt anyone. I wouldn't even judge if they showed it to a private circle of friends that they know for sure it won't hurt either

Sharing publicly, on the other hand, especially to random strangers on the internet, especially if it's proudly, and especially if its while the events are still going on and impacting real people and then expecting to be praised for it, shows a clear lack of understanding that others aren't just NPCs-for-drama in their WASP life playthrough

You don't have to do a lot of acting. You can if you want, but most groups won't make you. And you can always make your "character" a human fighter. It is the most whitebread PC you can roll up, but it'll get the job done. And, if you want and are comfortable, you can slip in little bits of roleplay when you feel you are able. Most of the big character roleplayers started as a quiet kid themselves once too. You build up.

And there are plenty of groups who are just all about the dice and the numbers who barely even play lipservice to the fluff and lore and acting, too.
