Is this bait? Dressing sexy doesn't harm anyone, actually.

I'm a woman and a feminist and I agree, TBH. Anything that cis-straight dudes really, really like is at least worthy of skepticism.

As a bi woman, I've never really been able to describe the difference between "hot celebrity or character being hot in an empowering way" and "hot celebrity or character being hot in a male gaze way." Like, there's definitely a difference, I can always *feel* the difference, but I've never been able to pin down just what the difference is. I mean, sometimes it's obvious with the camera framing and stuff, but other times it's just a *vibe*, y'know?

Seems like total wank bait.

This POV is through the lense of the male gaze and LMFAO there's more to life than living for the male gaze. If all you can do is see the worth of a woman's objectification to men then that's on you. No woman owes you an explanation as to how she presents herself to the world/others.

So I'll say this. There is ZERO political and social empowerment from any type of objectification. ZERO. This will always be true, for any type of socially constructed class. The willingness of humans to objectify each other is our main evil, it is the game you cannot win, the narrative you cannot master, I'd die on this hill.

BUT
individually something women as a class struggle with is being seen as multifaceted. It's depressingly easy to have other people put you in a certain class and get actually angry if you try to step out of it, and that's perhaps even more true with pop stars and music. So, I would not deny that in specific circumstances there is a reclamation of control.

For me personally, however, this is boring to me, I've seen it. Meg especially, like...I get it already. Meg has the greatest flow, and it feels like she's wasting it, it makes me mad lmao. If she must less body, more Thot Shit I guess, give me RAGE.

It sure is convenient, isn't it? And any critique of this is shut down with "you're just jealous."

I think what many people struggle with is the concept of choice not being inherently empowering when such overwhelming social pressures are involved. A woman can choose to get cosmetic plastic surgery and feel good about it, but that choice was likely largely influenced by female body standards. I say that as someone who got a nose job because I had a "witch's nose." Do I individually feel much better and more confident? Yes. Was it kind of wild for me to spend that much money and deal with that much pain/discomfort/risk of breathing difficulties just so I wouldn't feel "ugly" by society's standards? Yes. Would I have gotten the nose job if beauty standards were expanded/nonexistent? Absolutely not. Similar questions can be applied to dressing like that, or dressing like the opposite (depending on the cultural pressures involved).

It's nothing to judge an individual for (which is unfortunately very common), and it's more nuanced and complex for each person (I for one will only dress up for other women lol), but as a _societal pattern_, it's worth examining and criticizing.

One is fictional and can be designed to be appealing in all the tick boxes for fanservice, the others are human beings who can choose what they want to wear or at most have a little more say on their own anatomy unlike the fictional women you're comparing them to.

Hope that helps!

it makes money. and if it makes money, people will find a way to see it as empowering for the person making the money.

Female sexuality is not a zero-sum game, nor is empowerment.

Feeling sexually attractive to potential partners can absolutely be personally empowering, for many reasons and on multiple levels. The fact that the potential partners may also enjoy it does not cancel out whatever positives the the person derives from it.

Do I think everything every women does in order to feel sexually attractive is inherently empowering? No.
Do I think that a person stating that something is empowering for them automatically makes it so? No.
Do I think that something being empowering for an individual means that it is only, purely, and umcomplicatedly empowering for them? Nope.

What I do think is that if someone says something is empowering for them, we should let them be the judge of that as long as their behavior is lawful and they are a medically sane legal adult.

What I also think is that “empowerment” is a deeply complicated thing, and it is very rare that something is 100% empowering, even for just one single person, with zero potential for negative aspects. In fact, I don’t even know if a source of pure, unadulterated “empowerment” exists. I’m inclined to say it doesn’t.

What’s most important is that adult individuals be afforded the freedom to make their own personal choices, and determine what those choices mean for themselves--preferably without being subjected to the unjust and unnecessary “cost” of social judgement/ostracization/punishment/etc.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Men (in the sense OP means) don't want women to dress slutty. Men want women to do what men say. And sometimes men say "dress slutty". But sometimes they say "dress modest".

Empowering is women dressing how they want to, because they want to, and not because of what men want.

Yes we live in a society and patriarchal whatever means everyone's brain is a little bit poisoned by what men want. Obviously, until we fix that, it's not going to be as simple as "do what you want". Complaining on the internet about how women dress isn't exactly dismantling the patriarchy, though.

There is literally nothing we can do that all men will like. So fuck them and do what you want. And if that means taking their cash while wearing a bikini top more power to you. If that means hating on women for wearing bikini tops because that makes them bad women then I can't stop you but I'm not a fan.

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2022-03-12 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think what is empowering depends on the person. I find walking around the basement of my dad's house in a sports bra and shorts empowering for two reasons.

1). I've been kinda consistently body shamed and told I need to fit a mold since I was a teen .
2.) I've been frequently infantalized because of being a person with autism and it's nice to feel like a dang adult sometimes.

(Sorry if this seems self-pitying or too "woe is me" I just wanted to give an example)

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Dressing like this only works when you're young and slim.

No one cares if an older, fatter woman dresses like this-- except to tell her that she's too fat and old to be wearing clothing like this, and won't attract ANYONE.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
a better question is "who gives a shit if what a woman is wearing is empowering or not". just let us fucking live, man.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well we're looking at two different things here, aren’t we?

1) individual women dressing like tgat because they want to
2) celebrities dressing like that/being told to dress like that because it sells

The first is empowering, the second is just commercialisation of women's bodies.

Yep. It's very convenient that what they claim is empowering is seen as sexy by majority.

Sorry not sorry, a woman getting plastic surgery and dressing in basically her underwear to look like a cis man's wet dream isn't empowering, it's playing right into their kinks.

i've seen this argument before in the discussion around video games, that a scantily clad female character is there as a male fap fantasy but a scantily clad male is not a female fap fantasy but a male empowerment fantasy (because mUsClEs), and wondered "so what would a female empowerment fantasy look like"

and the only conclusion i could come to is that it would probably still bear a remarkable resemblance to a male fap fantasy, mostly because the qualities that make someone seem powerful are the same ones that people find attractive in a prospective mate and partly because you can probably find a male who'll fap over anything

(i'm genuinely curious btw, what would females find to be a female empowerment fantasy in this context?)
