Yup, that is the AO3 vibe. It is awful.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is definitely fandom-specific and not platform-specific.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I haven't seen this in any of my fandoms (or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places).

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
+10000000 Haven't seen it in my fandoms either. I don't doubt that it's out there, but as you say, it's highly fandom specific.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
ikr I'm in about 4 fandoms right now and none of them have tried to pull this BS - so I don't think this particular experience is universal either.

I haven't had that experience on A03, probably because my fandoms skew older. I agree with the sentiment, but this isn't a new phenomenon. I remember people co-opting real-life tragedies into their fandoms on LJ.

nah fam it's not ~the AO3 vibe~ it's the more oblivious and self-centered among my specific fandom vibe

Let me guess, you’re the anon who has it out for AO3 to the point where they use any opportunity to try to make it known how much you hate it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't feel like basing things off real life events is intrinsically harmful; you're free to imagine whatever you want in your own mind and it doesn't hurt anyone. I wouldn't even judge if they showed it to a private circle of friends that they know for sure it won't hurt either

Sharing publicly, on the other hand, especially to random strangers on the internet, especially if it's proudly, and especially if its while the events are still going on and impacting real people and then expecting to be praised for it, shows a clear lack of understanding that others aren't just NPCs-for-drama in their WASP life playthrough

I think if it's a story about a hockey player worried about his brother getting drafted or protesting, it's different than some fandom that's unrelated to anything.

That J2 RPF Haiti earthquake story, for example. Hooooweeee.

OP

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
It's usually more of a "what if these fictional characters were activists protesting X event, and also they made out, probably at the protest?" or "what if these fictional characters who are canonically from an entirely different culture were Suffering Victims in the irl situation where real people are being hurt, and also they made out?" with this fandom tho

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
NA - That J2 RPF Haiti earthquake story was an utter mess, and it was definitely racist. The author was disgracefully clueless and ignorant. But to be honest, I felt horrible for them.

It's not that each individual comment was unreasonable, and I don't question the right or fairness of POC fans specifically in responding with overt outrage. But the total response when amassed in its entirety was a proportional response magnified by a thousand. I can't even imagine it. I hope the author is less ignorant and cluelessly prejudiced now. But I also hope they got through it without having some kind of total emotional breakdown.

I'd make this a secret, but I don't know how many people even remember the J2 RPF Haiti earthquake story.

I don't think they're ~just pretending~ to care, I think they do care but are bad at compartmentalizing. Contrary to what Not Like Other Girls girls and Chads like to tell yourselves, liking "hawt guys" doesn't override a girl's ability to care about serious things.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
so is your argument here that a fic which really, really tone-deafly and appropriatively uses other people's irl suffering and death as a backdrop for fictional characters making out (which is what it always turns into with these fics) is a sign of Really Caring, Actually? Because I can only assume you haven't seen the kind of fics in question. It was a whole thing last summer with nonwhite fans being not happy about these folks using BLM this way and now they're at it again

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Found the person who wants a cookie for their "there was only one cot" fic.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thankfully I haven't seen anything like this happen in my recent fandoms, but this really does remind me of something that had happened waaay back in my Hetalia phase on livejournal. I can't remember where war broke out, but there were people coming up with OCs to represent said countries going through said war and - yeah needless to say it was distasteful.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
At least Hetalia is a relevant fandom for that.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
oh boy i'm having flashbacks to when the hetalia cosplayers did nazi salutes in front of a memorial for holocaust victims. not a trace of tact to be found.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
And they never use warnings... People that were touched by recent RL events should read their fic in peace.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh you think that's bad?

Every Gear of Duty or Call of War Game is going to be set in a poorly reskinned Ukraine for a decade.

DON'T THINK ABOUT THE EVENT!!!

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I know the war is serious, but you're phrasing only makes me think of this:

(Anonymous) 2022-03-12 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This is reminding me how I headcanoned a character being Ukrainian ages ago (they have a mysterious backstory and alluded to a genocide, which might have been the Holodomor)...but I decided against writing a fic due to worry about lack of knowledge, though I read a book about it. I'm definitely still not writing about it...

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. But, "at least that was a thing from our own country"

is kinda making a huge assumption about where people on A03 live in the world. A03 is not US exclusive.
