I haven't had that experience on A03, probably because my fandoms skew older. I agree with the sentiment, but this isn't a new phenomenon. I remember people co-opting real-life tragedies into their fandoms on LJ.

I was on a fic mailing list back in the day (Outside the Lines on the off chance anyone remembers it) which actually imposed a moratorium on 9/11 fic in the immediate aftermath. At the time teen!me I thought it was silly, but now I'm glad the mods had the sense to do it.

Same here. And yes, I remember it happening a lot decades ago (I'm a fandom oldbie, sue me).
