I read it at 11 as did my entire friend circle. I think it's one of those books that is just so well told that it works for kids and adults. His Dark Materials and The Call of the Wild also come for that kind of a book.

Yeah, the assertion of it not being for kids because of the violence is weird to me because I read a lot of explicitly YA-labeled books that had pretty intense violence.
