Two other artists I like very much who aren't top 40 at all are the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa.
I thought Alice's Restaurant wasn't a hit because it's about half an hour long, although it's certainly got a cult following.

Wasn't "Touch of Grey" a hit?

Zappa had "Valley Girl"! With his daughter Moon Unit!

true, but like Lou Reed, Top 40 as a concept wasn't what either the Grateful Dead or Frank was about.

Oh, for sure. It's just...that one oddball novelty hit that exploded, in light of Zappa's whole career is just amazing. It's like if Lou Reed's hit had been "Disco Mystic." :D
