Are we talking Tale as Old as Time (Beauty and the Beast), or Provincial Life? Because I heard a crap ton of both, more even than Let It Go when Frozen came out

It's because it's an Award Bait song. It was specifically designed to reach the top of the charts and win an Oscar (which it did, by the way) to act as a selling point.

No joke. I could actually play a half decent rendition of the Pokemon original theme song on one of those. By memory. I have no musical ability otherwise so it just goes to show how frickin obsessed with Pokemon I was at 9-10 years old.

I thought by "main theme" you meant the instrumental piece that plays at the very beginning and wondered how that would come off as smarmy.
