This seems like a popular opinion for a fair segment of the fanbase, although I personally don't agree at all (can't stand Seth MacFarlane).

He gets better by the end of Season 2. It is clear that his acting chops were pretty slack at the start of the show, but also that doing the show has really sharpened him up on that score too.

It's not just that I dislike his acting, I also dislike his sense of humor and overall vibe.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Well, the humour also is toned down in S2. The vibe, though, I dunno. Ah well, to each their own I suppose.

There is absolutely nothing about anything he is involved in that I want to watch. Jokes about his wife cheating on him with an alien who's a literal dickhead? I assume that's what it means when he comes out his forehead. This is "good Star Trek"? Jokes as in treating her unprofessionally later when she's his 1st officer? This is such misogynistic trash, which is what I expect from MacFarland.

Both of which is set up for Mercer realizing he is acting like a dickhead and needs to improve himself.

I can't stand Seth McFarlane either, but I kind of liked the Orville. I was shocked.

Side note: I had no idea McFarlane was such a fantastic trad pop/jazz/big band singer until last year. Even more shock.

OP I usually hate him. There was so much else about The Orville that I had been missing though, that his presence is kind if like an unfortunate turd in the corner of an otherwise satisfying painting. Luckily I can mostly ignore it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's because this particular part of the fanbase needs a white guy at the helm. And with you on Seth MacFarlane ugh.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yeah, that absolutely meshes with this secret given Sisko and Jane way make up half the Captains the OP actually did like. FFS

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone who can stand Seth's humor for a single instant is a putz. I watched enough of Orville to see what misogynistic, low-minded crap it was. So yeah, MacFarlane's trying to appeal to that fanbase, no doubt about it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
That fanbase does not exist, sorry bud. Classic Trek fans tend to be big on everything up to Voyager. You're literally talking bullcrap.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-13 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
And excludes Star Trek: Enterprise, with the white dude as Captain. With only two non-white people in the main cast. And only two women as part of the main cast too.
