I think I heard that this was the case for the casting directors as well; she wasn't a top choice because they associated her with her Rose voice, but changed their minds when they heard her speaking out of character

She auditioned for any role in the movie by singing "You're Welcome" from Moana. She didn't even go in for Mirabel, the casting team just decided holy crap, here she is.
