I think another problem is so many (of the mainstream film releases and perceptions) frame Batman as the one who is correct solely because by power alone, he's the underdog. He's the "Intellect" character and so is often the "correct" one. Instead of more equal understanding/"correct"ness on both sides or even Batman being shown to be in the wrong.

NAYRT

I agree. And frankly, I think a certain amount of it is nerds being nerds. The fact that he's the "Intellect" character is always going to be intrinsically appealing to nerds. Unfortunately it's a really boring take on the character IMO.

That is true. It's definitely a thing that a lot of writers trip over trying to balance the power scales when you put Batman up against other superheroes. Why is a man in a bat-suit cool compared to guys who can shoot lasers from their eyes or conceivably punch planets? So they try to fix that by just making him always right. Which means making them always wrong.

And a lot of the skills Batman has that do make him valuable to teams full of people who can punch planets are ... well, teamwork skills. Organisation. Information gathering. Ability to process weird shit and translate it into human psychology. Willingness to act as a communications hub. Stuff that most movie-versions of Batman haven't had any chance to develop yet, because they're still in the flying-solo part of their career. So he just comes off as an arrogant dickbag a lot of the time.

(This is not to say he's never been an arrogant dickbag in the comics, he has plenty, he's just also had a lot more room in the comics and cartoon incarnations to develop ... an actual personality. And skills. And work with significantly more people)

Also, I will say, another thing some version do is try to make him cooler by making him more ~tortured and dark~ (hi, Justice League Dark) and that's ... It comes off so weird, when he's regularly in rooms with people who've watched their worlds be genocided.

I guess it's just hard to deal with the fact that the thing that makes Batman so functional as a superhero is not that he's the smartest or most tragic or the best, it's just that he's a pretty damn good middle manager, he generally prioritises information flow and communication, and he has a significant amount of experience translating absolutely batshit circumstances into understandable motivations and predictions for what the bonkers person will do next. So he's a great guy to call if weird shit is happening or if you need someone to ride herd on a large number of wildly different people at once.

I really like this take, too!!

“I am compliance. I am the night shift. I. Am. Batmanager!”
