I don't care if it is a fandom heresy, I still recommend starting reading Pratchett's Discworld series with The Colour of Magic. It is still my favourite of his books. But I also unironically enjoy the flavour of heroic fantasy he was riffing on too.

The first two books, The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic have a noticeably different tone than the later ones.

They're undoubtedly funny, but they're more... 'taking the piss of Epic Fantasy tropes' than, 'humour with social commentary'. They're just a different experience from the later books, and if you're recommending the series to a newbie then they're not going to give a good idea of what it's like as a whole.

That said, they're *fun*, and Rincewind is a loveable character with a lot of staying power.
