I really badly need braces, like medically not just for aesthetic purposes so insurance will cover it, and went to the orthodontist last year to get everything started. The orthodontist herself was super nice and understanding that I would not be able to afford anything if insurance wasn't paying for it, but then her assistants kept trying to pressure me into taking all these (optional, read: self paid) extras. Like they gave me a contract that listed some optional pre-checks and when I didn't check them they told me they would have to ~draft an entire new contract~ if I didn't do it so I buckled and just let them do it, even though it cost me almost 100€.
And then they sent me the contract for the actual braces and a whole list of extra procedures (like better materials, etc. etc.) and when on the phone I said, okay so if I bring the contract back i'll just leave this page out? They tried to pressure me into it again.

The clinic for the jaw surgery they recommended me also requires an additional 500€ of self pay because they have some 3D preconstruction software that they use or something, that wouldn't be covered by insurance and that they said they will not do without.

Like as I said, the orthodontist seemed nice & also I've gotten all the casts and xrays and plans done there so i don't know how easy it is to switch, but I've put off trying to get started because it's upsetting me so much and I'm afraid I'll just let them talk me into more expensive shit I can't afford. I kind of want to make an appointment and talk with her about it (and maybe get a recommendation for a different surgeon) but maybe I'm just being delusional thinking maybe her assistants are just shit

I'm so sorry. I've had doctors like that where they were great, but their staff was pushy and/or incompetent. I really hope that their boss talks to them and they stop being so pushy towards you.

Do you happen to be French?

If you live in France, you basically just have to get outside of Paris or any big city to get decent treatment. I'd rather pay for one night in a hotel than pay about 100 euros more for the very same procedure but in Paris with a doctor or staff that couldn't give less of a shit about you and your medical issues.

This is so shitty, anon!
I don't know there you are, but we also have big difference in payment in capital vs other cities so anon with Paris has some solid advice.

(I need braces for aestethic purposes: I have a tooth that is so much higher than all others that it looks like I have a broken tooth. I can't smile properly and I will never in my life afford needed treatment. Fucking teeth)

If thats Germany, you wont have to pay the bills in one chunk or anytime soon after you start. I started my invisalign (full self pay) in i think Sep. 19. And finished in Feb. 21. My ONLY bill came in August 21.
And there were options to pay in full, or to make a payment plan with the company that does the billing. (Most dentists in germany outsource their billing to third parties).

Adding to this, you can still try to sent the bills to the health insurance, sometimes they will cover stuff after all, or at least a Portion.
And if not, since it's a medically relevant expense, you can put in your tax report and maybe get a tax return from it!
