Eh, a bunch of people thought there were COVID-1 to COVID-18. I mean, some people were being funny or facetious, yes, but some people truly thought and just didn't connect it with the year the first cases were identified. Of course, they may have been confused by the fact that it is also called SARS-CoV-2 because it is a second strain of a severe acute respiratory syndrome–related coronavirus.

Also since the news of it only started spreading in very late 2019, almost no one heard about it until 2020, so that probably doesn't help people realize that "19" refers to a year.

I mean I literally remember being at MAGFest the first weekend of January 2020, resting in my room between meetups and events and idly looking at news headlines on my laptop about "medical experts concerned about new respiratory virus spreading in China", and thinking that sure didn't sound good. And I kept an eye on that, and I don't think I ever heard it referred to as "COVID-19" for at least a few weeks after that, maybe a month, so possibly as late as February. (And most people don't pay that much attention and were blindsided out of nowhere in March 2020, judging from how many people on social media have been posting in the last couple weeks about how "Two years ago we had no idea what was coming!")

I think a lot of people (especially Americans, since we are kind of bad about paying attention to anything that is happening in other countries) still don't realize it was actually identified in 2019, not the first few months of 2020.
