I am contractually obligated to mention that Grisha means Greg and she made a universe of wizards named Greg.

I'm contractually obligated to point out that this gets pointed out all the time and it's impossible to be a fan of the series without knowing it.

I put up with ridiculous English in anime all the time, so I consider "Greg" pretty tame.

Or all the "let's just use random German words for everything" in anime and Japanese games.
After you watched shows where an evil organ selling secret organisation is called Krankenhaus (hospital) or the protagonist of a game has the fancy name Sieg Wahrheit (victory truth, neither of these being common names or names at all), you get kinda numb to something as silly as "Greg".

Not Greg, a diminutive for Greg. So more like Greggie, Gregster, or some vibe that's similar.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Greg is a diminutive, though. It's short for Gregory.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Grigori not have a colloquial form? I was taught that diminutives were more intimate than that.

I love Russian diminutives, especially Dima.

Don't know why, but they're so cute in this language.

For the OP, cancelling Russian THEMED stuff is completely ridiculous. I hope someone shoots Putin in the head tonight, obviously.

This discussion unlocked a memory I have of reading a biography about the band Pussy Riot, because in one part it said when one of the members was a child she signed her first name on her homework, and got in trouble because she didn't use the diminutive. The book said that signing her full name was considered a deliberately disrespectful thing to do, and children are always expected to go by diminutives because the full version implies they think they deserve an adult level of respect. The book made it sound like this was standard practice in Russia in general, but it was so strange I wondered to what extent it was really true, or if it's just strict schools and families that do it.

This is really weird and not at all standart. You supposed to sign your work by your last name actually. But it varies of course.
It's considered somewhat weird for children to use full name and not diminutive, but it mostly can get you bullied by your classmates and not teachers. But you get a lot of shitty people in school systems though, so it's possible it happened to her.

I'm Russian and this is the first time I hear something like this. The teacher was obviously an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am contractually obligated to mention that this is deliberate, because the wizards took that as their title in honor of the first wizard hero.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
You'd think people would wonder if there was a reason instead of immediately reaching the conclusion that the author was that stupid. She based an entire setting for three books on Russia but it sure makes sense that she's so stupid she did no research and pulled a random word out of her ass that just happened to be a common Russian nickname and used it for her wizard-race without knowing that's what it was?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Look, she's a bestselling author whose research into Russia really hasn't been that great, she doesn't need that much protecting, let us have some jokes about it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a pretty low-quality meme.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My dude, people telling you that your tired joke is stupid isn't that much defending.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Once I learned about that, I thought it was kind of nice, and also not at all bad that the diminutive form is used. Gives the impression that guy was a folk hero whose status was elevated over time.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 09:35 am (UTC)(link)
And what, exactly, do you hope to accomplish with this contract? COngratulation, you know ONE piece of information about this fandom, one that EVERYONE knows because that's all assholes like you bring up whenever the series is mentionned, and that has NOTHING to do with the present discussion.
Are you also contractually obligated to, say, every and anytime anyone mentions England whatever the context, that their policeman are called Bobbies?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's actually the perfect comparison, so much so that I wonder if that's what the author took her inspiration from.
