God, 8tracks was fun. I never even waded into the fandom aspect of it, it was just SO GOOD for that old mixtape feeling.

The older ones seem to understand IRL. They’re just bizarrely specific about which dynamics they will and won’t read. (“These people’s fantasies are bizarrely specific, and they won’t read or watch anything that deviates even slightly” is a phenomenon in everything from MtF transformation porn to fandom of the actual Digimon series.)

One, I agree that it was a good decision for this movie not to go there and I really liked those characters having a platonic friendship.

Two, this strikes me as one of those things where there's no good answer, where the real problem is just that there's such a small proportion of movies with Asian leads in the first place. And so every movie that does get released with an Asian lead has to bear an enormous weight of representation. There should be lots of movies with Asian romantic leads and Asian main characters in platonic relationships. It's artificial scarcity.

I really liked that about the movie, because I'm sick to death of tacked on love interests in Marvel, especially when the female love interest is just a less powerful version of the male lead (but a better person, and with the odd spunky line). Not making Katy the love interest is part of what gave her an interesting personality. I see where it's problematic, though. They can presumably solve it by giving him a love interest (not Katy) in the next movie.

What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

Every large, old fandom has these people, which is why these days I just watch Doctor Who and don't participate in the fandom. I can enjoy or dislike different parts of a big universe on my own without being told what I "should" hate and why.

Oof, yeah this is a tricky one to navigate because like you I LOVED their relationship as the fantastic bff's they are, and honestly m+f relationships that DON'T turn romantic or have a hint of it are rare as shit in media, but it wasn't lost on me that the only Asian-led MCU movie... didn't have a romance, lmao.

Ugh, it's annoying because our movies shouldn't have to be viewed through the lens of representation first instead of being able to just be fun stories(like they can be over in Korea, China, etc), but we haven't reached the point where there's many Asian-led movies in Hollywood for the trend of 'no romance for the hero' to NOT be noticeable as fuck. It's tricky and I'm not sure there's an answer that would actually please everyone.

(Like to be self-indulgent I'd like them to give Shang-Chi a love interest in the second movie with someone that isn't Katie, while Katie and Xialing date).
