What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

Cheating Derek Hale in the Teenwolf fandom is huge and I have no clue why...

I'm not in any Fandoms at the moment, but something I never understood over the years was turning a character, usually a Female one who's disliked simply for existing, into a raging asshole/slut/homewrecker. You could write your Slash without villifying the Female characters, you know. Just put her on a bus and continue your Slash-capades.

For the record, I very much dislike this kind of character assassination in fics. That said, it makes total sense to me. It's basically the vindictive jealousy impulse--very similar to the one that drives some people to hate the person their crush is into.

For some people, it's not enough to merely put the character on a bus to get her "out of the way." They need to make her worthless. They need to erase any regard the main character(s) ever had for her, out of seething jealousy over the fact that she ever came between their OTP. They have to make her utterly unlovable, so they can retroactively overwrite any love her ex ever felt for her. It was never love! She merely tricked him into feeling like he was obligated to love her, or like she was his only option, or like he didn't know what love was so maybe it was whatever he felt for her. But it wasn't actually love; the only one he's ever really loved is [other half of pairing].

Honestly, I think if the author knows they're indulging their inner jealousy gremlin when they write character assassination fics like this, then I have no problem with it. I get it, even. I'm a hardcore mono-shipper and just the thought of rival pairings makes my lip curl, so like, I get it. But some people are in complete denial. They will swear up and down (and post long tumblr rants) about how they're "just writing the character as she really is." Those are the people I back away from. I mean, at the end of the day, they're not really hurting anyone; they can write and believe whatever they want about the character. I'm just not gonna hang around for it.

Constantly raving about a certain couple of characters being siblings and besties when they've only interacted once.

Okay, I understand it. It's because they don't want them being shipped. But the performativism is exhausting. Why not just ignore shippers, who will never be a majority anyway because one of the characters is already in a firmly-established juggernaut ship.

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that gets me the most about the, "They're like siblings, you can't ship them!" is:

1) You (general "you") can think they have a sibling-esque relationship all you want, but the fact remains that at the end of the day, they aren't actual siblings, be it via biology or adoption, so that argument will do nothing to sway the shippers.
2) Considering just how often people ship characters who are actual siblings all the time, the idea that somebody might be put off by shipping characters who aren't related in any way, but who might still give off a sibling-esque vibe, is...hilarious, to say the very least.

But the last part, yeah lol. Every single time this comes up in the Genshin Impact fandom, people go "you can't ship them they're siblings, it's incest" and then others go "no they're not, Kaeya isn't even adopted, they're sworn brothers in the original text anyway" and I sit there thinking "they're fictional, I wouldn't have any issue shipping them if they were blood related lol".

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on everything except the adoption part, unless they were adopted when they were already an adult or something, or you're using adopted in the loose sense of having the same guardian figure who they don't consider a parent (e.g. the Elric brothers with Winry's grandma in Fullmetal Alchemist after their mom dies). Siblings literally adopted into a family are real siblings, and shipping them is shipping incest. Shipping incest is fine. But being adopted doesn't mean it isn't incest.

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 09:37 am (UTC)(link)
No it's not incest. Morally questionable irl and potentially shakey on the consent front depending on the ages involved but incest is exclusively used for sexual relations between BLOOD RELATED people.
Some people call what you describe emotional incest but by the literal and legal definition, incest is only based on blood relation.

Always-a-girl!Lan Zhan and Wei Ying (MDZS). If you want pretty cultivator lesbians, Lan Yi and Baoshan Sanren are right there and practically canon, and you can always go for Mianmian, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, Cangse Sanren, Madam Lan, Madam Jin, or Madam Yu. They come with all sorts of new tropes and relationships. I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, I just don't get it.

Maybe fans don't like any of those characters? I heard it's pretty standard consensus that the female characters in MDZS are shit. Maybe they want a character they like, not just any "pretty cultivator lesbian" will do.

SA - It's fanfiction, it's not like you have to keep them in character, and tbh, LY and BS don't really have much other than their attachment to each other fleshed out. Lots of potential there.

I always feel like these people are unaware that there are also a LOT of GL webnovels. I mean, yeah, playing in the big popular ballpit is more fun and thats why they do it but still...

I love that you've listed a bunch of ladies that either don't have a single personality trait or never interact, not even slightly. The male characters have stories and actual personalities in MDZS, the women don't, so yeah some people making the male characters wlw because it's much easier than having to invent everything checks out to me. You don't have to do anywhere near as much work to genderflip WWX/LWJ like you would have to for femslash.

When the ladies have actual interaction people do ship them: I know there's a big following for the two ladies in Heaven's Official Blessing, these fans may or may not be a fan of that ship too but in MDZS there's no equivalent because the women are all flat and terrible.

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)

And the two women in Heaven's Official that get shipped a lot and have a huge following are not actually women at all, surprise!

It's just weird to me that some people flock to fandoms with no great female characters and OOC genderbend everyone instead of, you know, seek out fandoms that do have female characters.

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-23 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! It reminds me of the people complaining about the relative lack of femslash in canons like the MCU.

Re: What trends in your current fandom do you just not understand?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Wild guess that people into danmei for the plots aren't going to be wildly interested in things like Gossip Girl, or Euphoria, or She-Ra. Or there are also fans who are interested in lots of genres and do write femslash for those shows, you just don't know it because you don't know anything about them other than what they do in the Heaven's Official fandom, specifically.

Someone makes a comment about this every time, and I'd like you to please get it in your heads that wanting more women in the genres you like is not a bad thing, and any time fans are asked to search outside of those genres for representation, that's a sign of failure on the part of the writers of the genre, not the fans.

The IronDad people who write Peter as being in his mid to late teens, but then also write him and Tony snuggling and cuddling alone in bed together and being very physical with each other, and like, having Peter jump up and wrap his legs around Tony's waist while they embrace and the writing specifically describes how closely Peter clung to Tony with their bodies pressed together, etc. etc.

The kind of intimate touching that would be very peculiar between a sixteen-year-old boy and his 40-something mentor figure.

...And then these same people go absolutely berserk with pearl-clutching, mouth-frothing anti rage about the existence of Starker shippers.

It gives me a chuckle every time.

#NotAllIronDadFans, for the record. I like the majority of IronDad fans, and have no beef with them.

For what it's worth, the same phenomenon exists in Batman fandom.

(This is long and stupid I’m so sorry ahhh!)

I’m not in the Tik Tok part of the fandom(or Tik Tok at all really), but I’ve seen something called the Corset Challenge trending around, mostly there. I don’t really think most of the people participating are even part of the fandom, or have even looked up what it’s from, but they use a snippet from the song Haus of Holbein from the musical Six. I’m a pretty big fan of the musical(don’t @ me), and me and my friends in the fandom don’t really know what to think about this challenge?

For one, the people using the snippet to show off their skinny waists in a corset, and sometimes also showing off their boyfriends seem to miss the satirical aspect of the song. I don’t know how, because the part they use has a character clearly be uncomfortable when she says “No one wants a waist over nine inches”, and the next line “So what the makeup contains lead poison? At least your complexion will bring all the boys in” is even more blatant. But none of the people I’ve seen doing the trend seem to play this up for comedy, or even change their facial expression during the part where the character is uncomfortably being squeezed by the corset while they try to sing through it. It’s all very weird.

But on another note, they’re just having fun, and being confident in their bodies. So is it really an issue? Probably not. Maybe it can be argued that it’s bodyshaming if they’re earnestly using their Tik Tok to spread the message that nobody should have a waist over nine inches using this trend(which I’ve seen an article put forth as a possibility). But how can you actually tell someone’s doing that unless they blatantly say it? Without proof, I don’t believe everyone who participates is using this trend to spread anything bad. And it’s also not an issue that they’re not part of the fandom, but use the song. I’m just someone who looks up where every meme and trend I like originates from, so I can’t relate to people who don’t. But that’s still a me thing.

That... that is really odd. I hate that song (so over mocking other countries' accents when speaking English regardless of culture) but it's... not even trying to be subtle about its message (which is pretty imo- "idealised beauty standards are harmful" yeah, I guess but "women are all only forced into them by men's preferences" ugh this again).

I think they might be doing it to be ~ironic~ or something?

I think it's a generational thing, combined with online fandom (and fandom in general) being much more accessible than it was in the past to younger kids. The kids are rebelling against the moral excesses of their parents generation, rather like the Young Republicans in the '80s and '90s.
