The older ones seem to understand IRL. They’re just bizarrely specific about which dynamics they will and won’t read. (“These people’s fantasies are bizarrely specific, and they won’t read or watch anything that deviates even slightly” is a phenomenon in everything from MtF transformation porn to fandom of the actual Digimon series.)

being "submissive" or having a soft/passive temperament in your normal life isn't a bad thing either.

There's a difference between having a passive temperment and being sexually submissive, though, and I think that's what the secret is talking about.

Yes but the point is that people tend to view subbing as something inherently pathetic and degrading, and even those who defend the practice will say shit like "subbing is fine because subs tend to be powerful people in their normal lives".

I.e. only powerful people are worth respect.

I remember reading a lot in my early days of learning about BDSM (since my OTP lend themselves so well to it) that a not insignificant amount of subs in the bedroom are people who have a lot of power in their regular ordinary public lives, and sexual submissiveness is like a vacation from that responsibility. Which seems pretty reasonable to me.

I get the feeling OP has come across a subset of fandom that doesn't understand/isn't aware that not everyone is 24/7...

Amen. HOnestly, bosses-in-RL being sub in the bedroom (and vice versa) is one of my favorite dynamics.

THIS is one of the main reasons i dislike a lot of D/s fic/kinkfic/etc. The 'sub' is not only super-subby in bed/during sex, but a wilting, trembling, fading flower in real life, too, who cries at the drop of a hat and can't actually deal with anything in life without their 'Dom' there to shield them and/or soothe them and/or tell them what to do.

You do you, writers & readers, and your kinks are all fine and dandy and all, but man - I really want to read some D/s stuff where the sub outside of sex situations will basically kick your fucking ass, and even *in* sexyfuntimes still spits and fights. Maybe that's not traditional 'sub' so nobody's ever going to write it, but I just don't enjoy reading the 'traditional' stuff.

Only time I enjoy it when the sub character is the one who also has less power in real life is when they are actually more experienced and especially when they are super enthusiastic and the one who is always suggesting things they'd like to try. Not into the dynamic of subs who have no sexual experience and have to be talked into things as well as being super soft in real life. That's just boring to me.

Urgh, yes. And if you have to be TALKED INTO doing something, that screams of consent issues to me, which I only like in a very limited fashion, and this is not that.

Mind telling me the fandom? Since it's a small one, it seems, I probably have no clue about it, but I'm generally up to read something no matter what if it interests me.... :D

Only fandom I'm active in anymore, as usual, Vagrant Story. Basically while playing the game I got stuck not only on the obviously-destined-to-be-popular charismatic/creepy cult leader, but also his "partner" and "truest friend" who deferred to him and flinched away from his anger, but was not above shouting at him when he crossed a line (immediate thought: "Holy crap, he has BALLS", since Sydney's terrifying), or waxing poetic about how yes, of course he's lying because "everyone lies (but he wouldn't lie to ME)".

...And thus I had my first slash ship, wrote my first smut of any configuration, and wound up researching BDSM, since the cult leader has prosthetic arms with basically knives for fingers. And twenty years later, found out apparently the artist who did the character designs actually visited a fetish club for inspiration. The only thing that is a surprise there is that he admitted it.

And I mean, if you want the specific story mentioned... Here. *runs*

I thought that particular storyline/'verse was based on kind of quasi-medieval fantasy-land stuff, not anything that would make knife-hand prosthetic arms possible.

Well, the prosthetic limbs are definitely fantasy-land - they replaced his arms of flesh that were a sacrifice to his gods, so presumably like much of the rest of the things that are going on in the game, they're powered by dark magic. So you're not wrong. ;)

(Also his legs according to the Japanese text. This squicked the heck out of some people in the English fandom when we found out.)

HA! Okay, i was totally off on the fandom, I was thinking of that webcomic that's illustrated, it has quite a lot of sex and nudity, queer characters, etc., mostly pretty lighthearted, good art....cannot think of the name to save my life.

But the one you're meaning/that you wrote for has some damn fine art going on - very intriguing characters! :D

Ahhh, I don't know webcomics... Wait a second *googles* Okay I guess Vagrant Queen is not it. (That and "Hark! A Vagrant" pop up constantly when I'm entering the fandom to post new fic, but I didn't actually know what "Vagrant Queen" was.)

But yes, the character design is by Akihiko Yoshida and I've printed out several of his pics and framed them for my walls. <3 Someday I'd love to get a high-poly-count remake or remaster of the game, because even in PS1-era graphics the look of it is just beautiful, and the thought of it looking even as smooth and detailed as, say, its younger brother Final Fantasy 12... :D

I have no clue about webcomics, either - i've seen this one referenced a few times for queer characters, and the art itself is pretty neat. I've seen it mentioned on HERE, but I can't think wth the name is. So annoying!

Maybe? I have read some stories where the person is 'bratty' and they are a little feisty? But they all still seem to fall into that trope of 'helpless in the face of most real life situations/sub in life as well as in bed' kind of thing.... I dunno.

Oh I'm sure there's plenty of fic like that, I myself don't read much fic so I wouldn't know, I'm just familiar with subbing while being defiant/an asshole in general. Of course being dominated is still the point, but it can definitely be what you describe!

I'm glad this clarified being submissive because my thought was "subscribing in the bedroom...?
