I hated the way that he wrote Donna's ending too, but at the same time, he's also the guy who created Donna's character and wrote the rest of her storyline in the first place. And that part of it was amazing.

Also, I'm not sure that bringing back RTD necessarily does mean going backwards. RTD has made a lot of critically well-regarded and often forward-looking TV since he left Doctor Who. It's not obvious that he's the same person creatively as he was 15 years ago, or that him coming back means that he's just going to play the hits. It's possible, but I guess we'll see.

If he'd left the ending alone, because no matter what else you can say the ending before last was a powerfully emotional moment that furthered the show's exploration of the Doctor's character and left a lot of moral ambiguity intact. Her final ending, when she was basically just a glorified extra, was crap.

RTD also allowed and covered up abuses going on so he could have his limelight. So I give 0 fucks. He's also almost certainly part of why 9 ended when he did.

If that's the way that you feel about the situation, then obviously continuing to not watch the show is exactly what you should do.

Kay, enjoy your overdramatic shit writer who self-congratulates himself and writes an ending to a character that's all about how sad it is he's going

When you say something like this, it makes me feel like you might not be totally sincere in taking a moral stand against the crimes of RTD, and might just be using it as an excuse to bash a writer you dislike for other reasons. In fact, it makes me feel pretty confident about that.

Ooof, yeah, as the above commenter pointed out, this kind of response does erode your moral high ground stance.

It's fine if you don't like his writing. And it's fine if you're taking a moral stance against him given what went down when he was show-runner. But your wording implies that you didn't like his writing and just opportunistically used the fact of a hostile working environment to bash a writer you didn't like.

I’m against RTD for the reason ayrt originally stated, but I honestly agree with you and the above commenter that ayrt shot their credibility with their last comment. It does seem that they already hated him and are just using the opportunity they feel his legitimate wrongdoings provided to feel justified in their prior hate of his writing. That kind of opportunistic behavior is always pretty suspect.

I dislike him for both. It's possible, but honestly, most people care more about the writing aspect than the human aspect so. I react with kind.

This.

What, worse even than my idea of reanimating JNT's corpse as showrunner?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-27 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
JNT gets a bad rap. He would be a terrible showrunner, because he's not really a writer or script editor, and that's a big part of what the job of showrunner on modern Who includes. But he wasn't really a bad producer. His period on the show includes one of the strongest runs of television in the show's history (when he had an actual good head writer).

And he had to cope with a DG who actively hated the idea of SFF shows on British tele too.

I don't think they have to be. RTD and Moffatt wanted to be, how much they were suited to that is up for debate, but as producer then it should be remembered the golden rule of being the boss:

"The boss knows how to get it done, by knowing who can get it done." JNT knew a lot of people in the industry, he had the connections to get stuff done.

Eh. Probably not the worst possible thing? I'm cautiously pessimistic, yanno?

Not necessarily related to the discussion, I think "cautiously pessimistic" is my new goal.
