The big issue with her is imo, that she's a pretty great character actress who gives off the feeling that roles in comic book movies and the likes are beneath her so she doesn't really bother to give them her best shot.

This. She can be a very good actress, but she obviously never gave her best to this role. Or even close to her best. And I think you’re right about the reason being she thinks comic book movies are beneath her.

In her defense -- Marvel Studios treated her really shitty during production apparently. Then pursued her hardcore when she said she wouldn't return as Jane in the MCU; promising her all sorts of things and then going 'whoops; totally not our fault we cannot honor what we promised' when they had her under contract. Then butchering down the film to carve alot of her role out.

So her phoning in a performance was probably her own little fuck you to them. They had her but they couldn't make her put in 110%.

That’s a good point!

(Anonymous) 2022-03-28 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that too, absolutely. I also noticed she isn't all that great at playing love interest or love stories in general, but that also might've been because all I've seen her in with those themes were also not ... incredibly well written.

They didn't really give her much to work eith, plus some of that could be because of direction

(Anonymous) 2022-03-27 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's partly this, and also partly just, she's not well-suited to action star stuff. And that's fine, not all actors are, even really great actors.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like that's implying that her role gave her a wealth of material to work with that she just didn't bother with, as opposed to it just being super flat in general. Their weirdass anti spoiler measures probably also don't help if you want a deep performance out of an actor.
I do agree that they're shitass movies that are beneath her, so I'm definitely biased, but considering the horrendous treatment of actors in comic book movies I'm less inclined to believe that they just didn't bother trying because they're snobs.

There are other actors who've done a better job of fitting into the structure of a Marvel movie and delivering performances within that structure than her

It's never going to be a place where you're going to get high-quality actorly performances but she does seem to have a particular problem adapting to it

I liked the Jane Foster character and what Portman did with it, but I definitely agree the writing didn't do the character a lot of favours, especially in chunks of The Dark World.

I partially agree, but I'm also not sure if that "phoning it in" vibe was genuinely any fault of hers, or if it was a problem with the material and the directing. Like, the material for her was bland AF, but that in and of itself doesn't really explain how bland her performance was. However, it's not completely impossible that for some reason the direction she was getting was encouraging that kind of performance. I mean, I don't know why a director would ever encourage a bland performance like that, but Michelle Williams is also a very skilled, capable actress, and IMO her performance in Deadpool suffered from a very similar problem. Which is enough to make me wonder if there's a factor to this whole thing that I'm just not privy to.

Possibly it's a combo of all three: bland script, director encouraging a performance that "won't draw attention away from the male lead," and the actress phoning it in as a result.

SA - Ugh, I meant Venom, not Deadpool!

i've gotten that feeling from other big name actors/actresses in arguab;y bigger roles than jane's previously was (thinking specifically of halle berry as ororo/storm and january jones as emma frost), but have honestly never gotten that impression from natalie.

*arguably i'm tired

(Anonymous) 2022-03-27 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed her in the first Thor movie. And the second movie put her in Sexy Lamp mode for 90% of the movie so I can't blame her for not being thrilled with that. So I hope the script does the concept justice and she brings her A game again.

I didn't like anything about the second Thor movie, so I don't judge Natalie too harshly for being meh in what I consider the nadir of the franchise.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I like her fine, but I don't care for her as Jane and feel the same way.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel so conflicting about Jane. On one hand I LOVE Natalie Portman and I enjoyed her in pretty much every movie I've seen her in (and had such a big crush on Padme as a kid) but I never felt that charm around Jane and she just seemed incredibly boring.

Maybe it was because she was a human character surrounded by Asgardians and Darcy who all have powerful personalities, but something about the character just did not click.
