I was sympathetic until "taxes for thee but not for me, boo hoo no more tax evasion"

As a pleb working a ~regular job~ paying their fair share to societal services, I am no longer sympathetic.

Yeppp. Frankly I'm shocked PayPal wasn't already reporting income. Like, maybe it was just me being paranoid and having been burned by self-employment and trying to register a business, but if you're generating a significant amount of income, no shit it's taxable???

How do they know it's income? I gave a loan on paypal four years ago and I hope to get it back eventually.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd assume a single payment loan looks different than several smaller payments from several people.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what the "Goods and Services" designation is for. If you're loaning money to someone or paying them back for something, you set it as "Friends and Family."

(Anonymous) 2022-03-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. If I gotta pay taxes so do you.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
+1000

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
So you all are telling me that, if you knew with 100% certainty that you could get away without paying income tax, you would still pay it just out of an innate sense of fairness?

I'd give it because it is the right thing to do and helps the country as a whole and other people. I don't love how much money goes into military, but I do believe in government services and help for the disadvantaged in society. And I also believe that as people who benefit from living this country, we are rightly required to contribute our fair share.

NAYRT but yes. I don't have kids but some of my taxes go to schooling etc. I don't complain about that because education benefits everyone.

Also I can go to the hospital after falling down stairs and not pay for any of that. So. Yes. The latter may just be selfishness, but meh.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but yeah. I do not complain about paying taxes and would continue to do so.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, taxes are something I really believe in. I'm vocal about wanting governments to hold the wealthy more accountable, so I try not to be hypocrite about it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, because when I had a minor fire at my house I was very glad to have a fire department that showed up in less than five minutes to take care of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely as long as everyone else is paying too. What do you think funds firefighters, libraries, and public schools? As well as a bunch of other stuff?

Are you an actual child on FS?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Objectively, empirically, there are a lot of people in the world who wouldn't pay their taxes if they don't have to, or actually don't pay their taxes because they've figured out ways to get out of it.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Assuming everyone is selfish is a childish thing to do. Also an objectively, empirically incorrect assumption to make.

Besides, objectively, empirically, a whole lot more people do pay their fair share of taxes with full understanding that the money goes to services that help everyone.

Yes? Why wouldn't I?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. No taxes = no society.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
Just to check, are you one of those people who thinks universal healthcare is the first step towards communism?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
In all honesty? It sure would be NICE to not have to, but no, I'm not going to complain about my income being treated the same as everyone else's income.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's not an innate sense of fairness so much as recognizing that taxes are necessary for a functional society. Heck, I've double-paid my taxes in the years that I was self-employed, as a US citizen living abroad. I could've requested an exemption from the US half of my taxes since I was already being taxed by my country of residence, but my income was low enough that my US taxes all went to Social Security and Medicare, and I was very happy to help support those programs.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Big fucking same. Boo hoo, you can't cheat on your taxes anymore? Tough shit.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
This. This, exactly. I have no sympathy for people cheating on their taxes while I pay my fair share.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-29 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I was very sympathetic until that last line. Now I think the OP can go do one.
