Holy shit, Yami no Matsuei... I completely forgot about that manga for more than a decade here. THAT SNAKE SCENE. It's that manga with the snake scene, right??? GOD.
I'm a fan of Eroica!!! I enjoyed the fandom back in early 2000 but I'm not from any English speaking countries and here we love Riyoko Ikeda. Have you read Orpheus no Mado? It's one of my favourite manga of all the time, but I fear it's still not available in English.

AND LOL I actually started Vagrant Story because of you a while ago. I hit a wall because of IRL responsibilities making my life hell ,but I 'm liking the game so far! Grindy, but fun. I'm probably 8 hours in. :)))

...I suspect there might be more than one manga with "that snake scene", lol. But it definitely did have a scene that would qualify as "that snake scene". XD

My ex got me into both YnM and Eroica, at approximately the same time... fortunately right around the time they started getting an English translation, she'd been reading via fan translations for years. And was very happy to finally have a Tsuzuki for her Hisoka, and a Dorian for her Klaus. Fortunately both of those two absolutely pushed so many of my buttons, set in cracktastic canon that could be hilarious or incredibly dark at various moments... yeah, that was pretty easy to get into. ;)

I did not know of Orpheus no Mado, but a quick google and ... okay that premise sounds really interesting and I should not spoil myself by reading more. (And I loved the Rose of Versailles anime, though never got to check out the manga!) Looks like... there is an online English translation available, just no official one. I wonder if the Japanese-language version might be among the massive amount of manga aforementioned ex left behind when she moved out - there was a bunch of things I didn't recognize in there, and I know some never got an official English release. ...Already been thinking I should sort through those and rehome them since the bookshelf they were on fell apart.

And hahah, yeah, VS can be grindy and I'm pretty sure nearly everyone hit a wall at least once. (Almost always in the Snowfly Forest, since it's like every version of the Lost Woods from the Zelda series simultaneously. XD And then there was that one block puzzle in the temple...) Plot tapes (on VHS!) were being circulated back in the day by those of us who pushed through it, so others didn't have to rip their hair out to see how the story progressed. ;) But glad you've had some fun with it so far!

There is ... definitely a SNAKE scene alright. And then the manga went on hiatus forever (together with X-1999 the one I'm most bitter about). u_u

Yeaaah, and then the mangaka came back and her art style had changed a bunch and I think she claimed there was no gay subtext or something...? That was, uh, pretty weird.

Ah, X-1999. I am only passing familiar with that because some friends wanted to do a cosplay skit where the joke was basically "It's not Sakurazukamori... it's TAKARAZUKAmori!" I don't think I could survive that fandom because the only character I really liked in Tokyo Babylon was Hokuto, and I liked her even better when I found out what happened in X. I get the impression that is not a popular opinion.

Hokuto is amazing!

<3 <3 <3 I'm glad someone else thinks so - I got the impression a lot of readers hated her because she ruined the gay romance (which, I mean, one of them was going to kill the other, so there wasn't much to ruin...?)

Also she was just tiny and fierce, which is always something I appreciate. The bit where she and Seishirou are hanging out and she's just casually like "So if you EVER hurt my brother..." Awww yeah. That was enough to make me like her.

Thanks for confirming my fuzzy memories. I remember buying that manga blindly expecting something cute like lawful drugstore and then that snake scene happened and I was scarred forever. I remember it being on hiatus, but I though it'd be finished by now... it was interesting enough, but I always thought that MAYBE IT WAS THAT SCENE THAT BLOCKED THE PUBLICATION!! It was just so random...

X-1999 being incomplete still haunts me. One of the main reasons why I try reading only finished series now, with one or two exceptions.

Eroica is actually a Yasuko Aoike manga, not a Riyoko Ikeda manga. The artstyles are very similar though, being from the same era of classic shoujo in the 70s, so it’s an easy mistake to make. I know, because I made that same mistake too lol.

I think that maybe we are talking about different manga, then. I was referring to this:
Héroïque – The Glory of Napoleon (栄光のナポレオン – エロイカ, Eikō no Naporeon – Eroika) is a manga by Riyoko Ikeda that is the official sequel to The Rose of Versailles. (from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eikou_no_Napoleon_%E2%80%93_Eroica )
It's very much possible it's not available in English, thus the misunderstanding.

Ohhhh, yeah, different Eroica. I was referring to "From Eroica With Love" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_Eroica_with_Love). Indeed, similar art style, so I thought maybe you were just running with the theme of 70s shoujo manga being awesome and here's another good one by another well-known mangaka. :D

And yeah, I didn't know there was actually a sequel series to RoV either. :O Making a note to myself to actually use the whole title next time since I was not aware until now that there was another series that can be referred to as "Eroica".

Gotcha, that makes sense! And I hadn’t heard about that one, because I’ve only really read Rose of Versailles and and Oniisama e...

I’ll have to check it out and see if there’s any good English fan scanlations!
