I would do this too -- it's an in-person tabletop game? Why would that even piss off an artist IF they knew? Nobody's making money off of that. It's not like you're printing t-shirts and pocketing the revenue.

So that means I don't get why you as an artist would be pissed off, either, since you'd never know.

Yeah, I'm an artist too and I honestly don't understand why someone would be pissed about that. I'd be insanely flattered! It's not like they're trying to use the art to make money or claiming the art is theirs, they're just saying "this is what I imagine my tabletop character looks like."

To which I say, go forth and have fun!

original characters are often something with quite personal aspects, doubly more so when you actually roleplay them. so for people to steal something that you created with personal meaning to you, to then twist it into something for their own fantasies, feels bad.
there is a reason that what happens to a character if you leave a game without writing them out is a touchy topic. some people don't care, but to a lot of people having a stranger puppeteer their oc is unacceptable.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
They're just using their likeness though, not the whole character?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Right now I'm using a face claim from a video game for one of my characters because that was the closest thing I could find to how they look in my head. I'm not roleplaying that video game character, I'm just using them as a physical representation of my own character so the rest of my group knows what they're supposed to look like.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
sure, but the looks are still part of the character, part of what makes them them, no?

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
I guess, but I find that so petty. People use official art of characters as face claims all the time. There's already such a cringe factor when it comes to OCs because people take it to meme levels of embarrassment, this surely doesn't help.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ehhhh. Unless your character is very unique-looking, chances are there are already some other existing characters out there that look a lot like them.

(Anonymous) 2022-03-31 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
You're not disseminating their art and you're not using their art in a context that involves your own financial gain; you're fine.

I use people's art as the home screen on my phone all the time, and frankly, if an artist tried to tell me I couldn't, my response would be that I wasn't actually asking for permission.

For me there is a huge difference whether people do this offline or online. I personally wouldn't care if some random in a regular table top group brought the picture as a face claim to their sessions but would be pretty irked if someone reblogged/retweeted or worse, reposted my OC's artwork and tagged it with their own OC/player character's name. Mainly because for most artists, art of OCs already gets so much less attention than fanart that it getting mistagged or reposted only makes things worse.

In concept, I can see why you don't find an issue with this. Personally, I've come across someone who does this who is among other things, very distasteful as a human being. So I'm not really fond of the idea. This person also draws and probably would say exactly what you did.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-01 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you’re saying this while being aware that this isn’t a good argument against OP, because your lack of fondness for the idea is based on a completely separate person that you hate doing and saying similar things. And that this is not only a very biased reason for being against it, but it’s close to guilt by association. Not in the traditional sense of that term, of course. But it’s still similar enough, in that you don’t like the idea of OP doing this because someone you don’t like also does it. Anything this person does is automatically bad if someone else also does it. That’s how your comment sounds, albeit probably unintentionally. And the fact that you brought up that you think this person you know is among other things “very distasteful as a human being”(which is very harsh with no context, but I’m sure there is proper context for it that wasn’t relevant to this discussion) it can also be read as you also saying OP is distasteful. Only if you’re really stretching and reading things in bad faith, granted, because that’s also clearly not what you meant. But I’ve seen people making accusations like this stretch with even less connective tissue.

Also, the fact that you say you can see why OP doesn’t find an issue with this in concept can mean that you can see where OP is coming from if you separate the secret from this person you know. So if that’s something you get, I don’t know why bringing up this distasteful human being you know that also does similar things was relevant? I get that it can probably be hard to separate and not associate certain things if an asshole you know does them, so I guess that’s what you’re trying to say?

I don’t know, I just find your comment a bit strange(which might say more about me than anything, I acknowledge), and I’m trying to wrap my head around it and understand it. In general, and also from your perspective. But I suck at explaining my thoughts and opinions well a lot of the time, so not only am I one to talk when it comes to calling someone else’s comments strange, but this comment of mine is probably hella strange itself lol!
