wowww. sorry if I don't let that one part color the entire character for me. [personally, I thought it was very out of character.] mostly because I didn't take him seriously, but I guess that just means I fail even more, right?

and had I been compared to the Comedian and been proud of that, then perhaps I would deserve to have a similar experience, but uh, I would have to say Kyoya isn't on that same level.

Yeah, because faux rape is not that important, anyway. Why, trying to make a friend believe you're about to rape them is the oldest joke in the book!

The irony tag was there for a reason. I wouldn't wish rape on anyone. I apologize if you thought I was talking seriously.

Anyway, even without the rape, I don't get why you'd be proud to be compared with him. He's manipulative, greedy, arrogant, amoral, egotistical, a snob, classist...

I don't agree with what he did, I'll concede to that. personally I think it was a very bad 'joke' of sorts. I could go on about this for a long time but I won't...

Because he totally did it, he didn't get off her the minute she said "you aren't gonna rape me," with no intention of actually raping her to begin with. Nevermind that he did it to teach her the dynamics of female expectations, fuck all that! He's just a filthy rapist! Idiot.

He pretended he was going to rape her. Had Haruhi been any less of a badass, she would have been scared out of her mind. And you think that's ok? Not only that, but you're okay with him doing something that sick just to teach her a sexist lesson and (again) put her on her place?

Fuck, I don't even know what to say. I just hope no-one even tries to do to you what he threatened to do to Haruhi. I get the feeling you'd blame yourself. No-one should go through that.

It may be a sexist lesson, but it's relevant to Japanese culture's views for women. Again, he had no intention of actually raping her, and didn't get very far along into the process at all. He wasn't trying to say "sit there and be a useless vessel for baby making", it was like, "Look lady, you can't do everything a man does, because you are not a man." And this is true. She can think she can, but when it comes down to physically doing it, she couldn't have beaten the shit out of those guys. Try and tell me she could, since she's tiny as shit, and has no training for fighting or self defense. She couldn't do it, and Tamaki and the twins stepped in to freaking help her. She was out of line, not them.

Imagine if she'd been a man, then? Same size and everything, but simply of a different gender? What would have happened then, do you think?

No, but I believe women have different societal expectations to meet than men, because it's true.

In certain circles, yes, this is true. It's also a really big problem, and not something to be encouraged, or even accepted. Bringing women up to live in fear and believing we're unable to defend ourselves and/or other people is damaging, and a big part of why we're still so far from being on equal standing with men.

Plus, it's not true. Most violence and attacks are done to young men, not young women. They're more badly and more often hurt, but are they walking around in fear all the time? No, quite the opposite, I'd say.

Strength is not the most important thing when it comes to defending yourself and others, but attitude. I've dominated in confrontations many times, and I'm a small woman. Men twice my size have backed down, and I even threw one out of a private party with force.

Falsely giving women the impression that we're automatically going to lose a confrontation with a man is horrible. We're brainwashed into becoming victims.

Well that's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that she would've gotten her ass handed to her. Obviously those guys weren't interested in what girls or tiny boys wanted, seeing as they started advancing. She can "attitude" them all she wants, but most likely, those guys are thugs that won't have any of it.

We'll never know, will we? That's not the message the anime chose to promote. While male main characters are constantly facing overwhelming odds, and enemies much stronger than themselves that they're supposed to overcome, female characters are constantly told that they can't do the same.

I think my mind edited away that part of the anime, because I totally didn't remember it until you mentioned it. That whole episode is just fucked up; you're not supposed to try and defend anyone if you're a woman? What the hell?? I felt like strangling someone after that.

And it was such an awesome story otherwise (though it's being destroyed in the manga, I gather). *sigh*

Yes! Thank you! I could understand someone liking the character if they mentally retconned that part, but that episode completely destroyed him for me.

Haruhi did some really noble, helping those girls. I can't believe that everyone thought she was wrong to defend them.

Yes. It's a very clear example of how differently male and female characters are treated in fiction; male characters are supposed to go up against overwhelming odds in order to overcome them and grow as people, and are seen as noble, brave, and strong for it. Female characters are apparently a completely different story. They think we don't dream of adventure and heroics as much as male readers/viewers? Hah.

I actually agree with you. I don't like what that episode has to say and, like you, erased it from my memory and thus, didn't let it color my opinions of Kyoya.
the whole episode seems so out of place with the rest of the series that I just consider it a lapse in the minds of the writers, and again, tend to forget about it when thinking about Ouran and Kyoya.

Ah, okay then. Sorry for lashing out like that, but that scene nearly ruined Ouran Host Club AND a friendship for me. Should remember to keep personal stuff out of internet discussions.

Now that I'm a bit calmer, I kind of get why you could be flattered. He's a very intelligent man, a Magnificient Bastard (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MagnificentBastard) who always get what he wants.

no, that's understandable. anime is a hard thing to be into when you're a feminist. I guess erasing that episode from my memory is my way of letting myself still enjoy the series, because it has many better things to say than that one episode does.

It helps that it's never mentioned again after that episode. Weird, but it made me happy. And yeah, it really felt out of sync with the rest of the series. Maybe the writers/mangaka really did have a moment of insanity...

yeah, exactly. you'd think that Tamaki would have been more confrontational about it, rather than just shutting up and walking away with Kyoya's lotion. :F
