Yeah if you don't like the canon you can just say that, it's rather silly to go around asserting that your preferred viewpoint is the actual intent. Even if it does make far more sense than the actual canon. (Transfem Robin Newman my beloved...)

I don't mind "Character is [headcanon], I don't make the rules", but only because I always read that wording as jokingly hyperbolic. That being said, I don't really engage with headcanon posts so I never end up in drama because of people taking their headcanons way too seriously.

There are many tropes that I enjoy in fiction that would be horrifying in real life. Sex pollen, arranged marriages, truth serum, general whumpage, occasional incest pairings, memory loss.... Even non-fanfic stuff like I loved the sense of incoming disaster in the GoT books. There's a bit where Arya is making a journey when the war has started, and she passes a field where the crop is rotting, unharvested because of the war - even though winter is coming. (Although that hits differently now.)

It's fiction though.

Ship manifestos used to be a thing, I really miss them as they were basically essays as to why X and Y from Z fandom should get together backed up by whatever the writer could pull from canon, tenuous though it sometimes was. Some were really well written, others less so, but it was great to read them and got me into some brilliant pairings and fandoms.
