Me too, nonny! And yes, it was wayyyyy funnier that way.

OP must be very young!

"Theme From The Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not)" was released and became a hit in 1981. Someone born the year it came out would be 41 years old.

The show wasn't on for a long time. I was thinking OP was born in the Nineties.

Child of the nineties, didn't know this.

No? This is a weird and completely inaccurate comment. Not getting a reference to a show from the early 80s wouldn’t make someone very young. Or young at all at this point, because like the anon upthread said, being born the year the show came out would make someone 41. And being born anytime after that in the 80s or early 90s would make someone be in their 30s. It’s not like anyone who doesn’t get the reference to The Greatest American Hero is Gen Z or something.

Well, I learned something today!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaand now it's stuck in my head. Thanks, OP.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Mine too!

(Anonymous) 2022-04-06 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Read this thread to find out what song it was-- not a huge fan of the show so I missed the answering machine thing -- and now it is also stuck in my head.

Me too -- I actually had to go fire it up on my phone :) Ahh, loved this song when I was a wee one.

(Anonymous) 2022-04-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
This is a cute secret! But I disagree on it not being as funny if you know what it’s referencing. That’s probably because I was already familiar with the song/show, and thought George making his own version of Believe it Or Not for his answering machine was hilarious, though! And the girl he’s avoiding talking to because she’s trying to dump him complaining about his answering machine message made it even funnier!

So since I came out of the episode with the opposite experience than you in being familiar with the reference, I can’t personally imagine it being funnier if I thought it was original. Because it would seem too random to me, and the song would seem to disjointed.
