Why is it so damn hard to travel by train in the United States

I mean I know the reasons (very long distances, systemic under investment, bad management) but I'm still annoyed. I hate flying so much.

Right there with you. I used to also hate driving and didn't have a car, so it was even more frustrating. Now I'll choose a multi-day car trip over flying if I have to go to another state.

Not only is it bad, but it's also expensive. I'm perfectly placed to take a direct overnight trip by train to a large national park. I looked into it for a vacation idea. Nixed it as soon as I got to the price for JUST THE TRAIN. $1,200. One way. For one person. To get a room where you'd actually be able to sleep for the overnight trip, instead of sitting up the whole time like you're in steerage on a transatlantic flight.

This! I would love to take a train to visit some relatives on the west coast (I'm in the eastern midwest in the US) but no way am I willing to sit up the whole time. Even the dinky little roomettes are over $1,000!

I stand by Greyhound. I've done it cross country (or at least from the east to almost California) and I've done it from the north to the south. Cheaper than the train (although I did enjoy my train trip north to south and a shorter within the north journey), however it takes longer, you've got to be on alert (which you should be anywhere, but Greyhound stops at 2 AM aren't the best), and it's not the best way to travel (more comfortable and relaxing. But you'll always have a story! I do recommend traveling with at least one other person if possible.

Doing that long of a trip seated in a bus seat seems... unpleasant.

AYRT

There's a bathroom on the bus (it's a Coach Bus, if you're familiar) and there's stops along the route -- so it's not like it's being seated the whole time. I.e. on your way cross country from say Boston, there's a stop by Connecticut, stop in NY, stop in NJ -- PA is the largest longest state for no reason, and you'll have two stops in Philly and Pittsburgh, and so on. You decide the route you want to take. But there's always stops!

Fuck I miss Greyhound so much. Ever since they pulled out of Canada a few years ago I've had to hunt around for the best other bus tickets I can find and they always cost at least twice what Greyhound used to cost, which puts them only slightly more affordable than a cheapo plane ticket.

Living in Canada, it honestly feels weird and wrong that we don't have a government-run cross-country bus system. Like, okay, maybe there wouldn't be as many busses per day as there was with Greyhound. Maybe the less populous routes would only have one bus per day, even. But it just feels like a massive country should have a regulated, guaranteed system for economy travel.

Yeah, Greyhound will get you there... eventually. They don't guarantee any particular timeframe, especially now when there's a driver shortage.

Well I'm in Europe, so I definitely feel this LOL

I love traveling by train, but I can only go, say, a couple cities over and it’s only worth it to go on the weekend when a roundtrip is ten bucks. It takes forever too, but that’s a bonus for me.

I am not from USA and prefer trains so I feel it so much. I hate flying (aviophobia + ear problems. One time with a really mild cold my ear pain was so bad I thought I would faint or bleed through ears). And buses are so tiresome on a long distances.
