She has been very open about it, so people who have been paying attention to her would have definitely heard about it. Although it's kind of telling that you think the guy who made an award-winning documentary about the complicated relationship between African American women and their hair was just too stupid to realize how painfully insulting his joke was.

thank you! i forgot to mention that alopecia also disproportionately affects black women (and/or AFAB people) and that there is more background to this particular interaction, such as chris rock's past bits about jada that were poorly received. i completely forgot about the hair documentary, that's... kind of funny in a very sad way.
