How will it make the world a better place if you read "heavier" literature? How will it make you a better person?

... What is your friend doing to make the world a better place?

You read what makes you happy, OP! Tackle the heavy stuff if and when you can cope with it, and it doesn't matter if you never can.

Yeah, reading is ultimately a very passive thing. I love it and I value it a lot, but you don't change the world by reading alone, no matter how shoddy or excellent your reading choices.
