Understandable. It's a very rough time we're living in and as long as you enjoy what you're reading that's what ultimately counts.

I've been experiencing something of the opposite. There's been so much chaos these past couple years, both on micro and macro levels, that admittedly I can't seem to enjoy happy feel-good media anymore and instead seek out the most fucked up literature and films I can find just to feel at ease with my present situation. A kind of 'well, the real world is bad but at least it isn't as nightmarish as the fictional one I just read about.'

Wanting to escape dark shit from the real world is a huge reason why I haven't been able to get back into certain JRPGs I played and loved back in the day. So I get that part.

But I agree with other anons, you should read what you want. If people don't like your recs, they don't have to look them up. No big deal.

I feel you, OP. For me, it is all about the escape. I'm okay reading things with messages, but these days I won't read any nonfiction or anything set in the real world. Fantasy/scifi set in really alien worlds only. I want to be far away from our depressing reality.

Your friend is being a bit of a snob, whether they mean to or not. There's nothing wrong with reading for escapism and entertainment and certainly nothing inherently inferior about doing so. There's also nothing inherently superior about reading books with heavier subjects, so nobody needs to do that if they don't want to.

when i was at my worst depression-wise i couldn't handle any heavy movies either, for a while all i consumed was animated shit. i knew i was doing it, but i just couldn't bring myself to invite that kind of stuff in.

now that i'm better i'm interested in other things again. what i'm trying to say is, i wouldn't worry about it, you'll probably find your interest back eventually and in the meantime maybe cotton candy helps

The books will still be there in a few years if you ever want to tackle them. Your friend should remember that. There's no time limit or expiration date on deciding when (and if, of course) you want to read a book.

Do you want to read heavier material, or do you just feel like you should?

If it's the latter, fuck that. Read what you enjoy, and if you're looking to expand what that means then find friends who will rec you stuff that they think *you* will like. If it's the former, and you want to throw some darker stuff in there, maybe start with short stories or novellas.

Doesn't really matter anyway since Ukraine is going to win. I mean, I don't mind considering it's generally rare that good songs win over politics and spectacle (the latter is why most people watch it, honesyly) but yeah, pretty much irrelevant whether the songs are good or not.


(Also, speaking from a country that has been getting deserved low points for years, I really wish they'd finally axe the rule that the founder countries get through no matter what. Would spare us some humiliation.)

I heard about this movie on a podcast a few months ago! I want to find it because it looks wild (also super interesting to learn different folklore & see different animation styles,). The clips I saw looked kinda nightmare inducing,imo lol but the flashy colors I guess I kinda see DBZ?

What bought about the comparison? Was it story wise or...?
