What are some of your favorite pieces of media that have overtly religious themes?

(Anonymous) 2022-04-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by today's Secret #7.
Any religion, be it discussed within movies, shows, books, games, music, et cetera.

Mine's Black Narcissus (1947) which deals with a convent of nuns.

Tolkien's stuff has religious themes without it getting in the way of the story, at least in my opinion. For me, at least, he works the themes into the story and makes everything work really well.

Prince of Egypt is my favorite movie dealing with religious. The Korean movie The Wailing is great.

The horror game series Faith is fantastic.

Call the Midwife is so good. I usually hate baby themed things and birth-themed things. Anything remotely related to that and I'm out. Except Call the Midwife. It is just so good.

As an atheist with a decidedly non-Christian cultural background, I have a weird thing for mystery series with religious Christian amateur detectives…
- Cadfael
- Father Brown
- Grantchester

As far as fictional religions go, the relationship between Brutha and Om in Small Gods by Terry Pratchett, the Temple of the White Rat in Ursula Vernon/T. Kingfisher's Clocktaur/paladin books, and the world of the Five Gods books by Lois McMaster Bujold are some of my favorite books, period. And I was raised non-religious and have always been an atheist.

Songs:

The Trapeze Swinger by Gragory Alan Isakov. (The original is by Iron & Wine, but Isakov’s cover edges it out for me.)

Thin Blue Flame by Josh Ritter.

I’m excluding Hallelujah from this list, because IMO it's not really saying something religious but using religious imagery and ideas metaphorically, so I don’t really consider it religious in nature.

As for TV, I guess Battlestar Galactica ultimately was in this category. I mean, the fact that it leaned all the way into the religious themes towards the end really disappointed me, but the eerie ambiguity of the first couple seasons was great, IMO, and I do still absolutely love the show overall, despite being disappointed with how it ended.

Also, Good Omens, but I’ve only seen the show.

that's a funny thing to say considering that religion had nothing to do with nge's themes, it was all in the aesthetics

Movies:
The Seventh Sign - 1988 apocalyptic drama horror film, starring Demi Moore, with Michael Biehn

Prior to his death on the crucifix, Jesus Christ was offered a drink of water, a kind act turned away by a Roman soldier. These events play a profound role in occurrences during modern times, which some construe as signs of Christ's return and the apocalypse. While Abby Quinn believes the end is coming and that her unborn child may be in danger as a result, Father Lucci, a Vatican agent, is doubtful no matter what evidence she presents.

Sister Act and Sister Act 2

Touch - 1997 drama/black comedy based on a novel by Elmore Leonard, starring Skeet Ulrich, Briget Fonda, and Christopher Walken

A young man, Juvenal, is apparently able to cure the sick by the laying-on of hands. Mysterious stigmata appear from time to time on his flesh. The former evangelist Bill Hill, tired of selling mobile homes for a living, persuades his friend Lynn Faulkner to befriend the innocent ex-monk and encourage him to aim for the big-time. But matters become complicated when the young couple falls in love, and even more complicated when fundamentalist August Murray takes exception to their relationship.

TV
Miracles - 2003 mystery-drama, with Skeet Ulrich, Angus Macfadyen, and Marisa Ramirez

Paul Callan, an investigator of modern miracles for the Catholic Church questions his faith after repeatedly finding mundane explanations for various supposed phenomena. After he witnesses a true, supernatural miracle that saves his life, only for his findings to be dismissed on a lack of evidence, Paul leaves the Church behind and is approached by Alva Keel to join his organization Sodalitas Quaerito, investigating and cataloging "unexplainable" phenomena. Along with former police officer Evelyn Santos, Paul and Alva attempt to battle the impending "darkness" before it's too late.

God Friended Me - 2018 comedy-drama, starring Brandon Micheal Hall

The series chronicles the life of Miles Finer (Hall), an outspoken atheist and podcaster, who is sent a friend request on Facebook by an account named "God". This account suggests new friends to Miles, people in his hometown of New York City, who will require assistance. Initially skeptical, Miles decides to follow these suggestions to help people. While following up on a suggestion, he meets and befriends Cara (Beane), a struggling magazine writer. Together with Cara and his hacker friend Rakesh (Sharma), Miles tries to find out who is behind the "God" account while still providing help to the account's continuing friend suggestions. Miles' atheist views sometimes cause friction with his father (Morton), who is the pastor of an Episcopal church in Harlem.

Sister Kate - 1989 sitcom, with Stephanie Beacham and Jason Priestly

Sister Kate is a nun who is transferred (in the pilot episode) to run an orphanage in Chicago. Sister Kate is put in charge of a group of seven unwanted orphans who, due to their scheming ways, have already run off three priests. Story lines involved Sister Kate matching wits with the kids, and the kids' potential adoptions.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

For the longest time I thought it was a fever dream because I had seen bits and pieces of it when I was a child during a PBS pledge drive. Came across it on VHS years later at the local library and instantly fell in love with it. I still remember the lyrics to most of the songs.

tbh that's one Bible story I never minded. And yeah, the musical was a wild ride.

Evil (2019)

Psychologist Kristen Bouchard reluctantly works together with David Acosta, a priest in training, to investigate and find a logical explanation for every supernatural occurrence within the Church.

One of the best currently produced TV shows in recent history. A natural successor to shows like The X-Files and Supernatural with heavy horror leanings. This is a show I genuinely crave and am also terrified of new episodes. The third season can't air soon enough.
