I also thought it was pointless and cruel to kill off the parents in the same train wreck, and I won't even get into the idea that Heaven consists of no activities other than running and eating fruit. That's a very cheap weight loss spa, and I'm amazed a writer as devout and imaginative as Lewis couldn't think of anything better.
P.S. Tolkien was also a devout catholic and there's tons of religious symbolism in LOTR, it's just less obvious than the Narnia books
P.P.S. I'm a hardcore atheist but I still appreciate both series as fantasy classics.
