This type of "heavier, grim/dark literature" is superior take bugs me. Books that are light and are happier in theme and flavor can tackle bigger issues too. A book doesn't have to be the equivalent of a bluegrass/country song to hold literary meaning.

Hope is important. Supportive family is important. Acceptance and being valid are important. They all live in the end is important. Life does not and shouldn't be defined by grief and loss and "tragic stuff happens."

Echoing everyone above me. Read what you want. Is it really popcorn... or have we all just been conditioned to think it is? (mostly rhetorical)
