Re: Nicest thing someone has done for you lately?

See that's the thing. I work for a community college, and if you're full-time, you get your tuition waived. If you're part-time, you don't. Which means if I got the job, I could get the AA for free! Since I'm part-time, I'd have to pay to take classes... which I can't really do on a part-time salary. So it's sort of a chicken and egg thing. :P

I actually applied to the full-time version of my current job (which I've been working for 11 years now) a few years back and said in the cover letter that if I was moved to full-time status I could probably have the required AA within a year between a combination of actual classes and prior learning assessments. They were like nope, gotta have the AA first.

But yeah. I think the two full-time folks left in part because of no remote work. You'd think that after the pandemic happened, and we were ALL suddenly working from home and still managed to keep the college open and (unexpectedly!) fully online throughout the entire thing, maybe the folks higher up would've realized that the web staff really don't have to be in the building to do their jobs. And most of the IT staff can remote in to reboot and troubleshoot and only come in to deal with particularly touchy hardware.

And boy do I appreciate those who have had to do face-to-face work all this time. At first I was worried that doing online ordering and curbside pick-up was putting them to more work, but I've talked to several workers now who prefer it due to the fact that each person who orders groceries online is one less person coming into the store where they literally HAVE to be, so... I can see how that helps. I just wish everyone would be willing to do their part and make it safer for those who don't have a choice.
