151. AMEN. I think Zachary Quinto will do an excellent job, but none of it will compare to the original series and I already feel like it's too bleak like all the offshoot shows instead of conveying the hope of a brighter future that Roddenberry established in the original show. And, of course, I've already seen evidence of the fandom bandwagoning among Quinto's fanbase. It really gets me because a reimagining IS NOT NECESSARY. Low budget and cheesy 60s effects aside, the original show is still relevant. It doesn't need to be updated for a younger audience. The original show was 20+ years before I was born and I still managed to "discover" it.

While I don't agree with you on Sheldon being a one-dimensional character, I don't understand the appeal of Sheldon/Penny given the fact that not only is he largely asexual, but he doesn't understand relationships and he really doesn't understand Penny. I'm all for Raj/Howard anyway.

I highly disagree. The franchise, as it stands, is stale. It's old. It's bulky. There's way too much baggage. What, exactly should they do for a new series or movie? Introduce an entirely new crew? Bring back the Generations cast again? This was the best way to get a new Trek movie in the works. This is the best way to get the franchise booted up again and get new people interested in it.

People who've never looked at Star Trek before are interested in this movie. That's a good thing. And it's worth pointing out that a lot of people found TOS through Voyager or TNG or DS9. And yes, much of it is relevant, but I firmly believe that this is going to help the franchise.

I don't think it's stale at all. It's good science fiction that still holds up and still inspires science fiction after it. The characters are still relate-able, as are the situations and a hope for a brighter future.

But if they had to do a reimagining, then yes, I do think they should have created a whole new crew. Not only does this version of the original crew not look remotely like them (Kirk with blue eyes and McCoy with brown? Chekhov with curly hair? Spock with white skin?), but their personalities seem awfully different which I can't believe is entirely because they're suppose to be younger.

Not to mention the total fucking with canon. McCoy is suppose to be 10 years older than Kirk, and Chekhov 10 years younger. Kirk was not the first captain of the Enterprise and McCoy wasn't Kirk's first chief medical officer. Not to mention Pike would be no more than maybe 11 years older than Kirk, not 20+. And so on and so forth. I know TOS wasn't always great with continuity, but if you're going to throw THAT MUCH CANON out the window (and very deliberately because, as JJ has bragged this movie isn't for Trek fans) than you may as well create an entire new crew and start from scratch. They did it with TNG, Voyager, DS9, they could do it again and even potentially do a better job than those shows, but bastardizing these beloved characters in the name of reimagining and reenergizing the fandom is bullshit.

I agree with you on that - TOS, TNG, DS9, etc., does hold up. It's good sci-fi. But the universe itself, what's been done with it (especially in Enterprise and Nemesis), has staled. It's become formulaic. I didn't mean that the old stuff was stale - simply that the stuff Paramount was putting out just before this wasn't very good.

I don't think a whole new crew would've worked. Maybe for a TV show, but not for a feature-length movie. And even then, probably not, if they'd stuck with the same formula they'd been using. Things needed to be shaken up and I think this reimaging is what's needed. The actors don't look one hundred per cent like the old ones? So? You're not going to find anyone like that.

And their personalities have shifted (slightly) because the time-line itself is being screwed with.

And really? That's the problem with the Star Trek franchise. Canon has become so sacrosanct and so much has already been written that there's really not any wriggle room left. I say to Hell with canon if they can tell a good story and give me the feeling of Star Trek. And I do not agree with you that they are bastardizing those characters in the least. I trust J.J. Abrams, I trust the writers, and most of all I trust Leonard Nimoy. He signed onto it, he must've liked it.

Considering the intent of the movie is to draw new fans, I don't see how a new crew couldn't work. The target audience are people who aren't familiar with the TOS crew or any other crew. They could shake things up just fine by creating whole new characters. In fact, Bryan Fuller keeps talking about doing just that and I hope he does because if anyone could do justice to refreshing the franchise it's him.

It isn't a matter of the actors not looking like the original cast, it's the matter of someone being too lazy to give Chris Pine and Karl Urban contacts, Anton Yelchin a wig, and slap some yellow make up up Zachary Quinto. Those seem like pretty simple details they could've bothered with. Small details, I know. Aside from Spock not being yellow-green, I really don't understand that.

And honestly, how is this a big shake up when they're reusing time travel for the umpteenth time? Not to mention they were suppose to be using the Guardian from City on the Edge of Forever. Yeah, I can really see how this isn't formulaic and a totally fresh concept.

If you're going to say to hell with the canon, then get a new crew. Like seriously, what is the point of keeping the same character names but throwing their personalities and their histories out the window? I can see absolutely no logic in that.

Gosh I'm so annoyed by the age thing especially. I can understand changing the history of the ship or people's home town or such, but why change everyone's age and appearance? It's just unnecessary. If they were going to do that, why not just come up with a whole new crew?
