1989? I don't know that I listened to anything distinct in 1989 besides...literally top40 radio and MTV I guess. Same thing I listened to in 1986-90.

I remember Milli Vanilli being all over everything - radio, MTV, etc.

And The Little Mermaid came out that year.

I was very into Roxette, Paula Abdul, Richard Marx, Madonna, Bobby Brown, and, yeah, New Kids on the Block.

One of my friends was really into The Cure, so I listened to quite a few of their songs, and Depeche Mode, too.

I feel like Batdance by Prince had pretty continuous play for a while.
Other songs that I felt hit it super big and got a lot of play were:
Black Velvet – Alannah Myles
Bust a Move – Young MC
Eternal Flame – The Bangles
If I Could Turn Back Time – Cher
Janie's Got a Gun - Aerosmith
Me So Horny – 2 Live Crew - this got that parental advisory label, which made it more popular
Pump Up the Jam – Technotronic
She Drives Me Crazy – Fine Young Cannibals
We Didn't Start the Fire – Billy Joel
Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler

If I could turn back time...I would have not bothered listening to NKOTB.
