Does it help to know that the music video for "Underground" is movie-canon?
Jareth was a singer-actor who became the Goblin King.

It's funny, because I've seen that video but never really thought of it as part of the movie canon or any kind of potential backstory for the Goblin King.

Yeah, the whole "it was all a dream/in the character's head" trope used to be really common in fantasy movies that were partially set in the 'modern' world. If it wasn't just straight up in Middle Earth or in a ye olde dragons and knights setting it was as if they HAD to include some way to cop out of the fantasy elements. I always hated that crap, so I'm glad that its not so common anymore.

I blame Mervyn LeRoy for that.

Well, in the case of Labyrinth there's significant basis in the canon for this iirc because some of the characters Sarah meets are hinted at in various objects she's got in her bedroom. Can't recall all the details, it's been a while since I watched the movie.

Yeah, when Sarah is in her room at the beginning the camera pans over the stuff in her room and iirc she has something related to pretty much every main character. Plus, you know, Sir Didymus' majestic steed is basically her dog. :)

This also used to be really common in fantasy books. Like, basically de rigeur. It's actually a really interesting change that fantasy stories don't really feel the need to do this anymore!

I thought it was an Alice in Wonderland homage.

NAYRT

But it honestly seems like a bit of both to me.

I think he was real.

I also want to find more Labyrinth fic to read after these recent secrets.

Since it's an older fandom, it may be worth checking ff.net.
segnung: Veronica's teen angst bullshit has a body count. ([film: H] Teen angst bullshit)

Oh, it definitely is. All the best Labyrinth fic I've loved came from long-expired geocities sites and ff. Sort of a shame ao3 hasn't attracted more writers to at least post their fic there.

I think he was the only one who was Actually Real, and, like something Truly Fae, gave her what she wanted. He pretty much outright says as much. She wanted him to be a villain in her fantasy. So he was the villain.
